Discover Gries: bathing area, chapels and trails
Accommodation in Gries
Gries and its surroundings offer a variety of reasons to stay: at the Plomberg bathing area, the water and the Drachenwand mountain shape the scenery, while chapels and a mill provide traces of history. There are also walking and cycling trails, including a family-friendly circular hike and a cycling tour through Gries. The options for planning a holiday are specific: for the hikes, elevation gain, walking time and starting point help you assess them; a signposted route is specified for the cycling tour.
Bathing area and waterfall
The Plomberg bathing area is idyllically situated in Plomberg/Gries below the Drachenwand and is accessible at all times. In the area around Gries, a small footbridge crosses the Klausbach; after a short further walk, you reach the small Plomberg waterfall. This gives you a choice of different nature experiences: a bathing area that is accessible at all times, or a short walk over the footbridge and along the stream to the waterfall.
Hiking and starting points
The Mondsee Panoramatrail has 606 metres of elevation gain on the ascent and can also be started at the St. Lorenz/Mondsee Gries bus stop. In the area around Gries, the Fitnessweg is an easy circular hike with around 125 metres of elevation gain and a walking time of about two hours at a leisurely pace; it is suitable for families. The approximate walking time gives families a concrete framework for planning their day; the Panoramatrail, by contrast, can be assessed based on its ascent and the stated starting point. St. Lorenz Gries is the closest stop to the starting point of the Almkogel tour. Check the current connections before setting out, as transport services may change.
Cycling through Gries
The cycling tour Around Lake Mondsee passes through Gries on its way to Scharfling. It is signposted as R2, the Salzkammergut Cycle Path. The route name, direction and signage give cyclists specific details to help them assess this tour when planning their holiday.
Chapels and a mill: history with specific dates
After Josef Schachl (Hanslbauer) had recovered from a serious operation in January 2016, he wanted to build the Hanslbauer Chapel out of gratitude and in memory of his life's work. It was consecrated on 15 September 2017 as part of a Mass. The chapel's history thus combines a personal background with a specifically dated event.
Two other historical points of interest lie in the area around Gries. The Thekla Chapel was built in 1864 in gratitude for a rescue. At the foot of the Drachenwand stands the Wistaudermühle, built in the 19th century. Both buildings date back to the 19th century, but their backgrounds differ: the reason for its construction is central to the Thekla Chapel, while the mill's construction period and location are the specific points of reference. Those interested in history can appreciate the personal stories behind the chapels and the historic mill as distinct points of interest.
