Vichtenstein combines an impressive history with paths through forests and the Danube Valley. Castle, Churches and Special Places of Remembrance

Vichtenstein Castle was built shortly after 1100 and has been continuously used and inhabited ever since. One of its oldest parts is a now freestanding, square keep. This makes the castle a particularly striking gateway to the history of the town, without limiting your exploration to a single building.

The religious buildings also tell stories of different eras. The parish church of St. Hippolyt houses the “Mother of the House of Vichtenstein,” a statue of the Virgin Mary dating to around 1430. Kasten is home to a former Gothic branch church that was later given a Baroque makeover. Above its north gate is a red marble relief of the Crucifixion dating from 1548. At Jagerbild on the Haugstein, the hunters built a new chapel in 1961; a wooden chapel was erected there later, and soon many pilgrims came to it. Views across the Danube Valley and Forest Landscape

The “Vichtenstein” Donausteig trailhead is located at a viewing platform in the centre of Vichtenstein, high above the narrow gorge of the Upper Danube. From there, the view extends across the deeply incised Danube Valley to the highest peaks of the Bavarian Forest and the Bohemian Forest. The Vichtenstein panoramic viewpoint offers numerous seats and a fountain with excellent drinking water quality.

A window designed as a wooden sculpture at the panoramic viewpoint opens up a view of the Lower Bavarian municipalities of Untergriesbach and Obernzell. For further orientation within the landscape, there is the 895-metre-high Haugstein: It rises above densely forested surroundings and is the highest elevation in the Innviertel. At the Donausteig rest area Teich, a pond lies in a small clearing within the Haugstein’s extensive spruce forest. Part of the route there is designated as a nature trail; information boards provide details about protected plants and animals.

Hiking Trails with Different Starting Points

The Kasten–Vichtenstein hiking trail climbs steeply uphill to Vichtenstein. On the way back, there are views across the Danube Valley and towards the small village of Kasten. The trail either starts and ends at the Kasten boat landing stage or at the Vichtenstein viewing platform. You can take these two options into account when planning your day without committing to a particular direction for the route.

Donausteig Stage 1_S02 Kasten–Engelhartszell also leads through the steep forest of the Donauleiten, following the old school path uphill to Vichtenstein. Halfway between Hütt and Vichtenstein lies the so-called “Fuchsenloch,” with an information board and a Donausteig rest area.
