Discover Helfenberg: Hiking, Culture and Regional Experiences
Helfenberg combines varied trails with historic sights and special regional experiences. Those who like to make their holiday active will find hikes of different lengths, a cross-border cycling route and a multi-day pilgrimage trail. At the same time, the parish church, castles, a palace and cultural attractions invite you to alternate between physical activity and discovery.
Hiking Trails for Different Day Plans
Ortsplatz Helfenberg is a good starting point for several tours. Both the 48 km Witiko Cycling Trail and the 3-Themes Hiking Trail begin and end there. The latter is approximately 14 km long; allow around 4¼ hours of walking time. Those looking for a longer hike with a special focus can include the 58 km Kraft-Quelle-Baum Circular Trail, which focuses on tree healing, in their travel plans.
A shorter described hiking option is the Castle Trail. It is 6.2 km long and takes approximately 1.5 hours to walk. The trail begins at the century-old loom in Ortsplatz Helfenberg and leads uphill to Piberstein Castle, built around 1200. This allows you to combine different ideas for the day: an extended tour, a shorter hike to a historic destination or a longer cycling route. The 3-Themes Trail is a family-friendly hike with 40 information panels and artist-designed seating areas.
For a multi-day undertaking, the Granite Pilgrimage Trail offers a broader regional perspective. The 90 km trail connects ten municipalities from St. Martin to Helfenberg and leads through the south-eastern part of Rohrbach District in three to four daily stages.
Churches, Castles and Culture
Helfenberg also has noteworthy places to visit away from the trails. The parish church is located in the town centre on the banks of the Steinerne Mühl. Construction work began in 1712; by the summer of 1717, the new church had been fully fitted out with renovated altars and a new organ. The furnishings include four statues of the Latin Fathers of the Church. They date from 1714 and were supplied by Philipp Rambler from Freistadt.
Helfenberg's other sights include Piberstein Castle, Revertera Palace and the Maria Rast forest chapel. During the summer months, annual theatre highlights are presented at the Kulturfabrik. This allows you to tailor your trip according to your interests, with a stronger focus on historic sites, sacred art or a cultural programme.
Regional Discoveries and the Right Accommodation
Another special attraction is the Haudum Speck Workshop. Guided tours are offered there, and a Böhmerwald platter snack can also be purchased to take away. This adds an insight into regional food production to a day of your holiday.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Helfenberg, it is worth deciding in advance what kind of excursions you would like to take. For a single day of hiking, the Castle Trail or the 3-Themes Trail are suitable options, while the 3-Themes Hiking Trail, the Kraft-Quelle-Baum Circular Trail and the Granite Pilgrimage Trail allow for longer itineraries. Those who prefer travelling by bicycle can consider the 48 km Witiko Cycling Trail. This way, your choice of accommodation can be adapted to your personal rhythm between nature, culture and regional discoveries.
