Wilhering: Abbey, Danube and Kürnbergerwald
Accommodation in Wilhering
In Wilhering, impressive monastic culture meets a variety of landscapes: the abbey church features a richly decorated Rococo interior, while trails lead from the abbey to the banks of the Danube and into the Kürnbergerwald. There is also a museum covering almost 900 years of monastic history, a historic park and routes to suit different time budgets. This makes it easy to shape your stay around your own interests—with culture, nature or both.
Rococo and monastic history
In Wilhering Abbey Church, color, sculpture, painting and stucco define the Rococo interior. If you are interested in the details of this period, the church’s furnishings offer a tangible way to explore it. The abbey museum has a different focus: its six themed rooms take visitors through almost 900 years of monastic history. The permanent exhibition also includes an exhibition dedicated to Fritz Fröhlich. Together, the church and museum offer two different perspectives on the abbey—the decorated church interior and a history spanning centuries.
Another place with its own distinctive character is the parish and pilgrimage church of Maria vom guten Rat in Dörnbach. It stands on a sandstone hill on the southern foothills of the Kürnberg, in the municipality of Wilhering. Its Late Gothic exterior pulpit bears two coats of arms dated 1501 and is considered unique in Austria. The church is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; check the opening hours before your visit.
Park, ancient yew and waterside trails
Wilhering Abbey Park was laid out in the mid-19th century. It is home to a nearly 900-year-old yew tree, designated a natural monument. The ancient tree adds a special feature to the park’s history, connecting the site’s long past with a specific protected natural landmark. The extensive main trail network of the Kürnbergerwald is also just minutes from the abbey. If you would rather head towards the Danube, a network of trails and walking paths leads directly from the abbey to the riverbank, providing access to the gravel and sandbanks there.
The Bauern- und Holzknechtrunde also showcases a variety of landscapes. It passes meadows and fields with panoramic views, a 1,000-year-old lime tree, the Kürnbergerwald, the Innbach stream, the Danube floodplains and the banks of the Danube. For planning purposes, note that wheelchair accessibility applies only to the section between Fall, the fish educational trail and the ferry; this section is paved and fully wheelchair-accessible.
Routes for different plans
The Planetary Trail offers two routes of very different lengths. The short Abbey Route is about 300 metres long and takes around 45 minutes. The second route is a circular hiking trail of approximately 4.5 kilometres; including breaks, it is estimated to take 2.5 to 3 hours. This distinction is useful when planning your day, without treating the two routes as if they took the same amount of time. Along the Planetary Trail, a team of students from Wilhering Abbey High School offers guided tours by appointment. These are particularly suitable for pupils in grades three to six. If you would like to book a tour, arrange a time in advance.
For walks on a different route, the Prinzensteig leads from Wilhering to Linz through the Kürnbergerwald. The fish educational trail follows the cycle path near the Ottensheim–Wilhering power station. The Passau-to-Vienna cycle route also passes through Wilhering along the Danube. So, alongside the two Planetary Trail options, there are hiking and cycling routes, each with its own route description.
The nearby town of Ottensheim is just a short trip from Wilhering Abbey by Danube ferry. If your plans depend on this connection, check the current timetable. That way, a visit to Ottensheim can be a planned part of your day rather than an unverified assumption.
A stay tailored to your interests
The abbey café complements the cultural and nature attractions with pastries and snacks, including the “Mönchsteller”, Stiftsofenbrot and Stiftsbaguette; the menu and selection may change. When choosing a holiday apartment in Wilhering, consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the abbey church and museum, the park and forest trails, or activities along the Danube. Search for accommodation based on the places that matter to your own itinerary.
