Traun: Castle History, Water and Green Paths
Accommodation in Traun
In Traun, castle history and art meet water activities, woodland paths and green retreats. The many options range from exhibitions in the castle and a museum with an extensive collection to Lake Oedt, the outdoor swimming pool and paths through the forest. This allows you to balance culture, activity and relaxation according to your own interests.
Castle History, Art and Collections
Traun Castle is based on a moated castle dating back to the 12th century. The ring-walled complex houses a freely accessible exhibition on the history of the castle and the nobility. An exhibition in the attic tells the story of the Abensperg-Traun family and the castle. These offer different perspectives on Traun Castle and its history. The castle also serves as a venue for classical concerts.
There are also various cultural highlights beyond the castle. The Museum im Steinhumergut houses more than 3,000 exhibits: its collection includes farming tools, household items, documents, certificates and photographs. The Raum der Kunst hosts exhibitions by the regional art scene. Those interested in historical everyday objects will find different exhibits at the museum than at the art exhibitions; the castle and attic, in turn, focus on the history of the building and the family.
Water, Activity and Woodland Discoveries
Lake Oedt is a groundwater lake covering 99,000 m² and reaching depths of up to 6 m. Its lakeside promenade is ideal for long walks. The outdoor swimming pool at the Badezentrum offers a different kind of experience: it has an L-shaped 50-metre pool and an adjoining non-swimmers’ area. The lake and the outdoor pool therefore differ in their layout, from an expansive groundwater lake with a lakeside promenade to a shaped swimming pool.
For exercise, there is also the Renata Hönisch Motorikpark®, which is free for the public to use. Its four groups of equipment form a training area for young and old. The forest nature trail turns your attention to nature: around 40 newly designed information boards provide details about tree and shrub species, the forest and its importance to people. There are also forest education stations where you can experience the forest with all your senses. Cyclists can also include the Roman Cycle Path in their plans; it has passed through Traun since 2009.
Green Spaces and Ideas for Your Day
The park around Traun Castle is located right in the centre of Traun. Green spaces, mature trees and the moat create a spacious area for relaxation. Another park is located in Alt-St. Martin, directly beside the Mühlbach stream. Covering around 2.5 ha, it features century-old trees, gravel paths, park benches, play equipment and green spaces for walks and relaxing. The green spaces therefore differ in their specific features: one is set beside the castle and its moat, while the other is by the Mühlbach and has paths, benches and play equipment.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Traun, you can start by thinking about the activities you want to include in your days: would you rather focus on the castle and exhibitions, water or outdoor activities? The kind of stay you have in mind can help you put together experiences that suit your interests and choose accommodation as a base for your trip.
