Discover Windischgarsten: Geology, Landscape and Culture
Windischgarsten combines impressive landscapes with an accessible geological history and well-established cultural offerings. The town lies on the edge of Kalkalpen National Park, while the Haller Mauern frame Windischgarsten to the south. This provides a diverse range of options for planning your trip: you can explore natural phenomena, discover historical traces or combine active days with family-friendly experiences.
Nature and geological history around Windischgarsten
A particularly hands-on introduction to the landscape is the Geological Educational Trail in Windischgarsten. The approximately 100-metre-long circular trail leads to 10 stations featuring 40 objects from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The trail is suitable for families, pushchairs, wheelchair users and people with walking impairments. This allows you to discover a geological subject in a manageable format without having to plan a long route.
The Wurbauerkogel National Park Panoramic Tower offers far-reaching views of the mountain world. The 21-metre-high glass tower has more than six floors. In good long-distance visibility, the viewing platform provides a 360-degree panoramic view of 21 peaks over 2,000 metres high. Inside the tower, the “Fascination of Rock” exhibition provides interesting facts about the local mountain world and the flora and fauna adapted to it.
The Millions Trail makes the diverse landscape of Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen and its 250-million-year-old geological history tangible at around 26 stations. Its route follows the historic Proviantweg, along which provisions and iron were transported over the Hengst Pass for centuries. Another way to explore the surrounding area on foot is the Veichltal circular hiking trail. It leads from Windischgarsten through the Veichltal valley, around Sonnwendkogel and Giererkogel, and back to Windischgarsten.
Culture and history in the town
If you would like to get to know Windischgarsten’s cultural character, the approximately one-hour guided tour of the town centre is ideal as a cultural walk. It provides information about the history, sights and economic development of Windischgarsten. At the local heritage museum, you can see Roman finds uncovered during several excavations connected with the Roman post station of Gabromagus.
The parish church of St. James is also one of the historic points of interest. It was consecrated on 14 August 1562; the altars and pulpit are particularly worth seeing. The church park also includes the Psalms Trail, which invites visitors to meditate. This allows you to combine a tour of the town with historical, art-related and quieter moments.
Active days and family activities
At Wurbauerkogel, the bike park has four mountain-bike trails with varying levels of difficulty: Blue Lollipop, Big Red, Red Root-Carpet and Black Widow. For planning purposes, the current operating status is important: because the lift service is currently suspended, the bike park is not currently maintained or supervised. Use continues to be at your own risk. The Wurbauerkogel Alpine Coaster will not be operating in summer 2026 due to the planned construction of a new chairlift.
Another activity at Wurbauerkogel is 3D archery. The panoramic course includes around 25 different 3D animals. The family course takes approximately two hours and includes a total of 10 activity stations. Depending on your preferred travel day, you can choose between a route focused more strongly on the landscape and an activity explicitly designated as a family course.
The right accommodation for planning your trip
When searching for a holiday apartment in Windischgarsten, it is worth deciding on your preferred focus for the trip. If you would like to place geological history and the landscape at the centre, the Geological Educational Trail, the panoramic tower and the Millions Trail are among the defining themes. For days focused on culture, the guided town tour, the local heritage museum and the parish church of St. James are good options. Families can also take into account the suitable conditions at the Geological Educational Trail and the family course in 3D archery. This way, you can choose a holiday apartment based on the programme that is to shape your trip, without presupposing any individual accommodation features.
