St. Konrad combines scenic hiking trails with traces of culture ranging from local folklore to contemporary art. The routes vary considerably in length and character: alongside two easy panoramic trails, there are high-altitude hikes and a long loop to Lake Laudachsee to choose from. There is also a cultural trail and a church with a Late Gothic core. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the experiences that interest you.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Small Panoramic Trail is 4.6 km long, while the Large Panoramic Trail is 7 km. Both are easy hikes and suitable for pushchairs. They share a starting point at the car park by Lake St. Konrad. This gives you two route lengths to choose from if you are looking for an easier hike that is suitable for pushchairs; the Large Panoramic Trail is 2.4 km longer.

The 7.2 km Hacklberg High-Altitude Trail offers a different perspective. This high-altitude hike begins at the car park by Lake St. Konrad and offers views of the mountains of the Almtal valley and the Totes Gebirge. If you are planning a longer outing, consider the Laudachsee loop: it runs from the same car park via Schrattenau to Lake Laudachsee and back, and is 17.9 km long. The two routes differ not only in length, but also in their destination and character.

The Reisenberg circular trail starts at Gasthaus Kranichsteg. At 5.8 km, it is known as a sunny-side route and offers views of Traunstein. There are several possible starting points for a mountain hike to Steineck: the St. Konrad Dürnberg bus stop, a car park beside the B 120, or the car park by Lake St. Konrad. From this last starting point, the Steineck mountain hike offers sweeping panoramic views as far as the Mühlviertel.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in St. Konrad, you can take your planned hiking focus into account: the easy panoramic trails are clearly different from the 17.9 km Laudachsee loop and the mountain hikes. Routes and conditions may change; check the latest tour information before your hike.

Art, history and folklore

The “Global Home” cultural trail is a themed route in St. Konrad and is associated with a 2024 European Capital of Culture project. A sculpture by Herbert Egger depicts a house made of wooden slats that plants and animals can move into. The motif brings the idea behind the project to life: the house is conceived not just as a human living space, but as a place where nature can move in too.

The 7 Bridges Trail between the lake and Gasthof Silbermair also became the setting for an art project. From 21 June 2024, photographs from “Eyes as Big as Plates” by Karoline Hjorth and Riita Ikonen were shown there. Four portraits depicted people from St. Konrad, and four depicted people from distant countries. The participants were transformed into figures at locations of their own choosing, blending into their respective surroundings. The date refers to that past exhibition and does not indicate that it is currently on display.

Older traces can be found in the parish church of St. Konrad, whose core dates back to the Late Gothic period. Above St. Konrad, you can also find the Rüpelfelder fields in Schrattenau. According to local tradition, they are regarded as evidence of an early indigenous population. This local story offers a different perspective from the art projects: here, oral tradition shapes how the landscape is viewed.

When choosing a holiday apartment in St. Konrad, it helps to consider the outings you have planned. The village offers short, easy hikes as well as longer routes and cultural points of interest. This lets you tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors, compare different hiking routes, or include art and history in your plans.
