Stroheim combines sweeping views with a distinctive pilgrimage tradition and a circular hiking trail. The attractions appeal to different interests: Mayrhoferberg is all about the views, the “In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors” trail gives an approximate walking time, while the church and Landerl Chapel bring history and religious customs to life. There is also the Garden of Secrets, with its expansive grounds and views across the Eferding Basin. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your trip, rather than limiting yourself to just one way of exploring.

Distant views from Mayrhoferberg and the Landerl Chapel

Mayrhoferberg is the highest point in the Eferding district. Its observation tower is 9 m high and stands at an elevation of 655 m. From there, the panoramic view extends to the Salzkammergut Alps and the Mühlviertel region. When foehn winds bring good visibility, around 130 places can be seen. Visibility is part of the experience: that number of places applies in foehn conditions with good visibility, not in all weather conditions.

The Landerl Chapel offers a different perspective on the landscape. It lies 2 km southeast of Stroheim town centre and affords views across the Eferding Basin. This lets you include two distinct viewpoints in your plans: the panorama from Mayrhoferberg, with its named distant horizons, and the view across the basin from the chapel. If far-reaching views matter to you, these specific landscapes may help you decide which excursions to take.

Hiking with an approximate time estimate

The “In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors” circular hiking trail is about 8 km long and takes approximately 2 hours to walk. The distance and estimated time help you plan the route as one part of your stay. Unlike the observation tower, where the panoramic view is the main attraction, this named hiking trail offers a specific route with an approximate duration. For a trip that caters to different interests, you can weigh up a hike against an excursion focused on distant views. Bear in mind when planning that both the distance and walking time are approximate.

Church, chapel and pilgrimage

Stroheim Church was built around 1235 by Count Johann I of Schaunberg. The Landerl Chapel was built much later, between 1901 and 1904. The buildings therefore reflect different periods of history: the church dates from the 13th century, and the chapel from the early 20th century.

The annual main pilgrimage sets out from Stroheim parish church in the afternoon on Ascension Day and proceeds to the Landerl Chapel. The procession is accompanied by the local brass band; songs and prayers are part of the occasion, as is the May devotion held at the chapel. If you would like to include this tradition in your travel plans, plan around this feast day. The pilgrimage connects the two named places of worship on a clearly defined annual occasion.

Garden of Secrets and regional views

The Garden of Secrets is a 20,000 m² garden complex. From there, views stretch across the Eferding Basin and far into the mountains. The garden adds its own perspective and expansive grounds to the area’s viewpoints. There is also a small café with a terrace, serving coffee and homemade pastries. If you plan to stop for refreshments during your visit, check the café’s current availability before travelling.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your plans

Which holiday apartment in Stroheim suits your plans depends first on which experiences you want to focus on: the circular hiking trail, distant views, architectural history or the pilgrimage on Ascension Day. These priorities give your search a clear direction, without requiring every activity to have equal importance. Compare the location of each holiday apartment with the places you want to visit, and also take into account the approximate walking time for the circular trail and the set date of the pilgrimage.
