Buch In Tirol combines a rich history with trails and natural attractions. Above Rotholz, the former Rottenburg Castle recalls the Lords of Rottenburg; at Ringenwechsel, traces of mining tell the story of another era. Other highlights include Notburga Chapel, the Tyrolean Silver Trail, Buch Waterfall and the Notburga Spruce. These varied points of interest can help you plan your holiday around cultural history, outdoor activities or an interest in nature.

Rottenburg Castle Ruins and Notburga Chapel

The former Rottenburg Castle lies above Rotholz. It was the seat of the powerful Lords of Rottenburg, who also held jurisdiction over the Rottenburg district court. The castle ruins are protected as a historic monument by ordinance. The ruins thus bring together the castle seat and the district court as aspects of the same lordship.

From the Esterhammer inn, you can reach the former Rottenburg Castle after a walk of about 20 minutes. Allow for the approximate walking time and check current trail conditions before setting off.

Notburga Chapel was built by the ruins in 1956/57. It commemorates the legend of Saint Notburga: according to tradition, she served as a maid at Rottenburg and died there in 1313. The chapel was built many centuries after the year associated with the legend, commemorating this tradition in a later structure.

Mining history at Ringenwechsel

Silver and copper were mined at Ringenwechsel in the 15th century. Above Troi, spoil heaps and numerous tunnels still bear witness to this mining period, when many miners settled there. In contrast to Rottenburg, the focus here is on raw materials, mining work and the miners’ settlement—a different perspective on local history. The dates provide different points of reference: the legend of Notburga is associated with 1313, while mining at Ringenwechsel dates to the 15th century.

Silver Trail, waterfall and natural monument

The Tyrolean Silver Trail passes Sailberg and then leads to Buch In Tirol, the last of the twelve municipalities along the route. At Buch Waterfall, a walk of about 20 minutes along a secured trail passes impressive and varied flora. The stream at the waterfall has shallow, calm spots for paddling and playing. This combines a section of trail with opportunities to observe nature and peaceful waterside spots; the approximate walking time can help you fit the outing into your day.

The Notburga Spruce is also a natural monument and features in many regional stories. It adds a connection to nature to the themes of the castle and mining, while also being rooted in the region’s storytelling tradition.

Plan your stay around your interests
