Discover Nikolsdorf: Culture, Hiking Trails and Mountain Views
Nikolsdorf lies at the far eastern edge of the Lienz valley floor and is considered the easternmost municipality in Tyrol. Even from the idyllic village center, you can look out towards the northern faces of the eastern Lienz Dolomites. The village therefore combines a striking landscape with an unusually diverse cultural history. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can base your choice on whether historical discoveries, hikes, winter experiences or exceptional views are the focus of your trip.
Village History and Sacred Architecture
The history of Nikolsdorf dates back to the Middle Ages: the village was first mentioned in historical documents in 1207 under the name “Itilsdorf.” A visible testament to its religious and architectural tradition is the Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew, which is protected as a historic monument in accordance with the relevant ordinance. Those interested in church art and historic interiors can also visit the pilgrimage church of Saints Chrysanth and Daria in Nörsach. The late Gothic hall church has an asymmetrical net-rib vault and frescoes dating from the 15th century.
The small Church of the Visitation of Mary in the hamlet of Lindsberg also makes its own distinctive contribution. It was built in 1855 and contains a reverse glass painting depicting Mary meeting her cousin Elizabeth. These diverse buildings make Nikolsdorf appealing to travelers who want to combine a stay not only with nature, but also with regional history and religious art.
Lengberg Castle and the Bachler Mill
Lengberg Castle offers another way to explore the past. It is believed to have already existed in a smaller form in the 11th century under the Eppenstein dynasty. The castle is also associated with a textile find consisting of more than 2,700 fabric fragments; the small finds have been dated to the period between the 14th and 18th centuries AD. Prior registration is required to visit the inner courtyard. The outdoor grounds can be accessed without this restriction. Keep this distinction in mind when planning your visit so that it fits your available time.
The Bachler Mill is a particularly vivid destination. It is one of the last two wheel mills still preserved in Nikolsdorf and is fully operational. As such, it provides an illustrative insight into a technical tradition.
Hiking, Flights and a Winter Experience
Hiking enthusiasts can take two stages of the Walter Mair circular hiking trail in the Lienz valley floor. Stage 2 is an easy 12.6 km hike ending at Lengberg Castle. Stage 3 runs from Chrysanthen near Nikolsdorf to the bottom station of the Zettersfeld cable car and crosses the municipal areas of Nikolsdorf, Dölsach, Nußdorf-Debant and Gaimberg. This information can help you consider, before choosing your accommodation, whether you would like to include a particular hiking stage in your travel plans. The two stages suit different day plans: one follows a set route length to Lengberg Castle, while the other connects several municipal areas along its course.
Scenic flights offer a special perspective on the landscape. The Nikolsdorf gliding airfield near Lienz is a starting point for flights along the main Alpine ridge, the Glockner and Venediger groups, and the Lienz and Sexten Dolomites. Scenic flights by motor aircraft depart from Nikolsdorf Airport and offer aerial views of the landscape. The Alter Rabantweg natural toboggan run is suitable for families and has a 120-meter-long illuminated tunnel.
Which Accommodation Location Suits Your Plans?
