Oberau Wildschönau: Mountain Landscapes, Tradition and Family Experiences

Between the Cable Car, Gorge and Adventure Trails

The Markbachjochbahn takes you to the Markbachjoch hiking area in an 8-seater gondola. This makes a cable-car ride easy to plan as a full-day activity when you want to experience the Wildschönau landscape from a different perspective. At Drachental Family Park, you can look forward to an 18-hole adventure mini-golf course and action-packed attractions in summer and winter. A special attraction is the Drachenflitzer Alpine Coaster: it operates regardless of the weather and includes spiral turns with a height of up to 25 metres.

Kundl Gorge offers a different holiday experience. The approximately 3.5-kilometre hiking route begins in the Mühltal district and is also accessible with a pushchair. Steep rock faces up to 200 metres high frame the gorge. From the end of May to the beginning of October, a sightseeing train also runs between Mühltal and the entrance to Kundl Gorge. If you prefer to experience nature in a playful way, with plenty of little discoveries, you can include the Holzweg trail in your plans. At its various stations, this family-friendly adventure trail explores nature, wood and life in the valley in earlier times.

Mountain Farming Culture and Special Traditions

The z'Bach Mountain Farming Museum brings the region's history to life. More than 1,200 exhibits illustrate the former austere life of Tyrolean mountain farmers. The museum is located in an original farmhouse dating from 1795. This creates a cultural focus that differs from the natural experiences around the gorge, mountains and forests.

A culinary speciality of Wildschönau is Krautinger. This turnip schnapps is distilled from the white stubble turnip and produced exclusively in Wildschönau. There are still 15 farmers who continue this tradition under the historic distilling rights. During guided tours of the herb garden, medicinal herbs, ointments and teas are presented. Alongside excursions and action, these insights add a regional and artisanal dimension to your trip.

Kragenjoch showcases a geological speciality of Wildschönau: it is the only limestone mountain in Wildschönau, while the surrounding mountains are made of slate. Cheese tours are offered at Schönangeralm in summer.

The surrounding area of Auffach also opens up further possibilities. The Schatzbergbahn runs directly from the centre of Auffach up to Schatzberg, providing access to the hiking area there. The Schatzberg toboggan run starts at the middle station of the associated gondola and leads through the forest to Auffach.
