Plangeross combines local history with routes that vary considerably in activity and time required. Alongside the Plangeroß parish church, there is a winter hiking loop, a long route to Plangeroßkopf, trails to the Kaunergrathütte and various forms of climbing. This range is useful when planning a holiday: you can first decide whether outdoor activities, climbing or a cultural highlight will shape your stay.

Local History and Trails

The Plangeroß parish church was built in 1765 to replace an older chapel and consecrated in 1778. This building history has two clearly dated milestones: the replacement of the older chapel and its later consecration. For travellers looking for a historical highlight in addition to the routes, it adds a cultural connection to the village's activities.

Hiking from a Loop Trail to a Mountain Route

The trail to Plangeroßkopf starts in Plangeross, leads to the Kaunergrathütte at 2,817 metres and then follows Alpine Club Trail No. 926 to the junction for Plangeroßkopf. A route description published in 2015 estimates that this hike takes 7 to 8 hours and involves 1,400 metres of elevation gain. Check these planning figures before setting out. The long hiking time and considerable elevation gain make this a route where the time required shapes your day's plans.

By contrast, the Plangeroß Loop is a 3.5 km winter hiking circuit with 60 metres of ascent and a stated duration of 50 minutes. It is marked as closed; check its status and conditions before visiting. The two options therefore require different amounts of time for hiking plans.

A hike to the Kaunergrathütte follows a very steep ascent through the forest to the Plangeroßalpe; the stream must be crossed twice. The shared hut name should not obscure the fact that this hike is a separate route. Stream crossings and trail conditions depend on the weather; check conditions before setting out.

Climbing with Different Focuses

The Plangeross Hexenkessel climbing area is recommended for experienced climbers and includes around 90 routes. Climbing conditions and route status should be checked on site. The Kaunergrathütte MSL climbing park in Plangeroß features 11 multi-pitch routes graded from 1 to 6. In Hexenkessel, the focus is on the approximate number of routes and the recommendation for experienced climbers; at the climbing park, it is on the multi-pitch format and grade range.

At Reiselehn near Plangeroß, ice climbing follows a ski touring ascent to an ice gully with a steep middle section. Conditions and avalanche risk depend on the weather. The starting point for the Reiselehn ice-climbing tour can be reached by bus to the Plangeroß stop; check the timetable before travelling.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Plangeross, it helps to decide on the kind of holiday you want first: a short hike, a long mountain tour or one of the types of climbing described here will each lead to different daily plans. If Reiselehn is part of your plans, also check the timetable for the Plangeroß stop. This way, you can start choosing accommodation based on the activities you actually intend to do.
