Discover Jerzens: Hochzeiger, Riegetal and Swiss pine
Jerzens combines winter sports, protected landscapes and unusual insights into the region’s culture. The Hochzeiger ski area is located directly at the entrance to the Pitztal valley in Jerzens. This gives the village a clear focus for everyone who wants to combine their trip with kilometres of pistes, a natural toboggan run and mountain experiences. At the same time, the special features of the Riegetal valley, the Swiss pine and the historic Stampfle go far beyond a purely winter sports holiday.
Hochzeiger: pistes and natural toboggan run
The Hochzeiger ski area offers 54 kilometres of pistes measured according to the actual runs taken. Calculated along the fall line, the total is 40 kilometres; the pistes are available at all levels of difficulty. These two figures describe different calculation methods and help you assess the area more precisely. Hochzeiger also has a 6-kilometre natural toboggan run. Anyone who wants to combine winter sports and tobogganing during their stay in Jerzens will therefore find two clearly defined activities in one place.
The Riegetal valley can also be combined with Hochzeiger: the protected landscape area is easily accessible from Hochzeiger via a hiking trail secured with ropes. Within the municipality of Jerzens, the Riegetal valley is designated as a protected landscape area and is characterised by its untouched nature and close connection to the natural environment. For planning your day, this offers an interesting contrast to the ski area: the focus here is not on kilometres of pistes, but on a protected landscape and the route through the natural surroundings.
Swiss pine forest and special stories from Jerzens
A closed Swiss pine forest lies above Jerzens. For centuries, it has protected the village from avalanches and mudflows. You will also encounter the Swiss pine in the interactive exhibition “The Swiss Pine – A Boundary-Crosser with Talents”. It explores the world and the stages of the Swiss pine’s life, from germination to falling. The exhibition also explains how Swiss pine wood is used in the areas of health, atmosphere and well-being. This allows you to combine a stay in the landscape with a closer look at the tree that shapes the area.
The historic highlights include the Stampfle, the oldest mill in Jerzens. It has been operating at its present location since 1582. The Stampfle is situated at the entrance to the village, directly on the Mühlbach stream, which has powered its water wheel for centuries. Another extraordinary facility is the underground milk pipeline: it transports fresh cow’s milk from the Tanzalm, located at an altitude of 1,980 metres, to the village of Jerzens, 3.5 kilometres away and 900 metres lower. It is considered a unique pipeline in the Alps.
Excursions, village trails and traditions
The hike to the Stuiben waterfall leads to its foot. There, a viewing platform offers an impressive view of this natural spectacle. If you prefer exploring the village, the circular route “short village walk/processional route” offers a view of the parish church of Jerzens. On an alpaca hike in the hamlet of Ritzenried, you take a short walk through the idyllic landscape together with alpacas. These different formats make it easier to create a varied stay without committing to just one type of trip.
A fixed date in the annual calendar is the large Almabtrieb in Jerzens, traditionally held every year on the second weekend in September. If you want to experience this custom, the date should be included in your travel planning. When choosing a holiday apartment in Jerzens, it can therefore be decisive whether you mainly want to use the Hochzeiger area, discover nature and the Swiss pine, or plan a stay around the Almabtrieb. Therefore, compare the holiday apartments according to your personal requirements and the programme you want for your trip.
