Dietenberg: Celtic House, Archaeology and Views
Accommodation in Dietenberg
Dietenberg combines a striking landscape with an archaeological hilltop settlement whose terraces and ramparts shape the area. As an island-like rise with steep slopes and a plateau running from east to west, it offers expansive views across central and western Styria. History and landscape sit side by side here: the settlement tells the story of former living spaces, while trails across the hill offer different ways to enjoy an excursion.
A Hilltop Settlement with a Unique Layout
The hilltop settlement on Dietenberg is one of Styria’s most significant archaeological sites. It is a protected monument because of its distinctive defensive structure. Seven artificially created terraces are still visible in the settlement complex, each protected by a rampart. This layout makes the structure easy to understand: rather than a single area, the site is defined by several stepped levels of settlement. Together with the plateau and steep slopes, this makes it a place where the shape of the landscape and archaeological traces are closely connected.
The Celtic House and Trails on Dietenberg
The reconstructed “Celtic House” offers insights into the living conditions and homes of people in the late La Tène period, around 100 BC. Guided tours of the Celtic House last 30 to 60 minutes and must be arranged in advance. If you would like to plan a guided tour, arrange a time beforehand. This makes it easy to include a visit to the reconstructed dwelling as a highlight in your travel plans.
The prehistoric hiking trail leads from the Celtic House up Dietenberg. The Celtic Trail, in turn, runs through vineyards and offers a lovely view of Ligist. The Ligister Rundweg lang trail starts at Ligist market square and initially follows the Celtic Trail and Dietenberg; along the way, it offers a view of Ligist. The Ligister Tour 748 offers a different focus: its final climb to Dietenberg comes with views and a Brettljause. Be sure to check separately whether the Brettljause is available. The descriptions therefore differ in specific ways: the Celtic Trail passes through vineyards, the circular trail links its starting point at Ligist market square with Dietenberg, and Tour 748 focuses on the final climb and a stop for refreshments.
Winegrowing, Views and History
The Kremser Greitbauer Buschenschank on Dietenberg offers views stretching from Ligist to Graz and can be reached via numerous hiking trails. A sign at the Kremser vulgo Greitbauer Buschenschank recalls Dietenberg’s former role as a Kreidfeuer signal station as part of the so-called Draulinie. This historical reference adds a distinct note alongside the archaeological settlement, drawing attention to the role attributed to Dietenberg in this context.
The Kremser family business also produces wine, vinegar and spirits and runs a Buschenschank as a secondary occupation. Blauer Wildbacher is the most widely grown grape variety across its four hectares of vineyards. These details show different aspects of local winegrowing, from cultivation to the family business’s other products.
The summer festival at Schilcherhof also offers a cultural event. It takes place every year in July and August and combines folk, jazz, blues, funk and cabaret with food from the kitchen and wine. The programme details vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current programme in advance.
Choose the Right Focus
When looking for a holiday apartment in Dietenberg, you can start by considering what you would like to focus on during your stay: the archaeological hilltop settlement and the Celtic House, trails through vineyards and across Dietenberg, or a cultural programme in summer. The different themes can help you choose a location based on your travel interests without turning the individual trail descriptions into a single combined tour. If you would like to combine cultural history and landscape, you will find several concrete starting points here to help plan your trip.
