Langenwang: Floodplain, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Langenwang
Families looking to combine nature, outdoor activities and local history will find plenty to explore in Langenwang: an extensive floodplain, named hiking routes, St. Andrew’s Church and an artificial ice rink with floodlighting. The town’s own railway station, with direct connections to the S6, is also convenient for leisure trips. You can choose a holiday apartment as your base according to the experiences that matter most for your trip.
Floodplain, trails and tours
Langenwang Au is an extensive floodplain area for recreation, located one kilometre west of Langenwang. Easy paths and nature trails run through the Au. A distinctive feature is the bee education trail with an observation hive, which adds a specific nature theme to the trails. This makes it possible to combine time in the floodplain with outdoor activity and discovery, without letting a single type of excursion define your entire holiday.
The Langenwang Panoramic Loop starts in the town centre and follows the route marked “1a” through Langenwang Au. It continues into Langwanger Schwöbing and the Traibachgraben valley. At the junction with the Christtagsfreudeweg, the loop branches off towards Assantberg and returns to the town centre via Lange Illach. The named sections make the route easy to follow. Trail conditions and markings may change; check the current signs before setting out.
The Langenwang Biotope Loop also passes through the picturesque floodplain landscape. It is another named route in the Au and offers an additional way to include the landscape in your day’s plans alongside the Panoramic Loop.
Local history and notable places
A striking landmark in the landscape is Hohenwang Castle Ruins. They stand on a steep rocky hill that drops almost vertically to the southwest, about 100 metres above the village of Langenwang. The approximate elevation and steep rock face give a vivid sense of the location; the ruins offer a different focus from the trails through the floodplain.
St. Andrew’s Church is also closely connected with local history: it is the oldest building in Langenwang. The parish church dedicated to St. Andrew underwent major alterations and expansions from 1493 to 1496 and houses a Gothic winged altar dating from 1509. These dates show a sequence over time: the later-dated altar followed the period of alterations. For anyone interested in architectural and art history as well as nature trails, these are tangible historical points of reference.
The market town of Langenwang holds the organised Christtagsfreude Hike every December. The exact date may vary, so check in advance if you want to include the hike in your travel plans. Langenwang’s artificial ice rink offers another, winter-focused activity: it has floodlighting and is a centre for ice skaters and ice hockey players from throughout the Mürz Valley. Langenwang therefore offers both an annual December event and a facility for ice skating and ice hockey.
Getting there and choosing accommodation
The town’s own railway station, with direct connections to the S6, is also convenient for leisure trips. Together with the Panoramic Loop’s starting point in the town centre and the Au’s location west of Langenwang, these provide different reference points for planning your holiday.
