Swimming at Spechtensee, the Spechtensee cross-country ski trail loop and the ski slopes of the Spechtensee lift each offer a different experience during a stay in Zlem. There are also cycling and hiking tours of various kinds. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, your preferred pace for the day may help you decide: water, winter sports, or activities on foot and by bike?

Winter at Spechtensee

At an elevation of 1,100 to 1,260 metres, the Spechtensee lift offers well-groomed ski slopes totalling 2.3 kilometres. It operates seasonally; check the current operating hours before planning your winter days. The lift’s history dates back to 1966. Another kind of winter sport is the easy Spechtensee cross-country ski trail: it is about 5.6 kilometres long and loops around Spechtensee. This gives you a choice between groomed slopes and an easy cross-country skiing loop.

Lake, hiking and refreshments

Spechtensee is a great place for swimming. Day fishing permits for the lake are available seasonally at the Spechtenseehütte; check availability before your arrival. After a longer hike, you can recharge at the Interhütte with a cold drink and a small alpine snack. Check opening hours and access in advance.

The family-friendly Spechtensee-Runde 315 loop covers 26.6 kilometres from Stainach to the Spechtenseehütte and through the Wörschachwald forest. The scenic Dachsteinblick–Gindlhorn bike-and-hike tour leads to Wörschachwald and includes a hike up Gindlhorn. The hike from Gasthof Dachsteinblick to Gindlhorn is short, scenic and offers impressive panoramic views. The Hechlstein loop follows a via ferrata to the summit of Hechlstein; the return route is an easier hiking trail. Check current route conditions before setting out. The trail’s approximately 5.6 kilometres can be compared with the 26.6 kilometres of the Spechtensee-Runde; these figures compare cross-country skiing and cycling, not the time they take.

For planning, you can weigh up different kinds of tours: a cycling loop rated as family-friendly, a short scenic hike, or a summit tour with a via ferrata. The route type and the stated start and end points can help you choose the right outing.
