Stainach offers varied days of holiday between the Enns, historic sites and trails with different characteristics. You can choose a flat loop with views over the meadows, follow the water to a Natur.Kraft.Platz or hike from Stainach to Pürgg and onwards through the landscape. The programme is rounded off by Trautenfels Castle, the history of Unterstainach and an adventure and family pool. This makes Stainach suitable for trip planning that combines active days, culture and time by the water.

Trails for different day plans

The Stainach Loop is a flat route near the Enns. Views over the meadows and the Grimming as a constant companion characterise this trail. The starting point is directly at the rear exit of Stainach-Irdning railway station. There is free parking, including Park&Ride, at the starting point or directly at Stainach railway station. This makes planning easier if you are arriving by car and want to incorporate a clearly described, manageable route into your day.

The circular trail to the Wasserplatz on the Enns offers a different atmosphere. It starts and ends at the Stainach sports ground, follows the small Leistenbach stream to the Enns and reaches the Natur.Kraft.Platz “Wasserplatz an der Enns” at its mouth. The defined starting and finishing point makes the trail a standalone excursion idea, without requiring you to plan another route.

Those who want to get to know several parts of the municipality can consider the circular tour to Pürgg. It leads from Stainach-Irdning railway station through several parts of the municipality of Stainach-Pürgg, from Stainach to the small village of Pürgg. The “Großes Gindlhorn und Leistenalm” route and the “Spechtensee über Leistenalm & Sinirböden” route are also available for additional hiking days. The first leads along a forest road to Pürgg, through the village, past the swimming pool and via the Himmelsleiter to the Gindlhorn. The second runs via the Leistenalm and the Leistensattel to Spechtensee, then back to Stainach through the forest and via the Sinirböden.

Culture between history and nature

One of Stainach’s special features is the town wall, which is a protected historic monument. Trautenfels Castle represents the history, culture and nature of the Liezen district. The permanent exhibition explores the natural and cultural history of the Styrian Enns Valley, the Paltental Valley and the Ausseerland region. This means an excursion can be filled not only with landscapes, but also with regional topics and historical connections.

Trautenfels Castle can be reached from Stainach-Irdning railway station on RegioBus routes 940 or 941 to the Trautenfels Schloss stop, followed by a five-minute walk. In the Unterstainach district, the castle complex that is still preserved today developed from an 18th-century structure. These two references offer different ways to explore history: one through the exhibition and the other through the development of a specific castle.

A day at the pool and accommodation planning

There are two swimming pools in Stainach and Pürgg, with a viewing terrace overlooking the Grimming. The Stainach adventure pool is an adventure and family pool. In 2026, the bathing season there ended on 30 August 2026. If you are planning a trip outside this period, the trails along the Enns and the cultural destinations can complement your day plan.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Stainach, you can therefore consider which focus matters most for your trip: direct access from a described starting point, excursions by RegioBus or a combination of hiking, a castle visit and a day at the pool. Routes 901, 940, 941 and 950 operate in the municipality of Stainach-Pürgg and its surroundings. For other places, you can also Trieben, Johnsbach, Bad Aussee, Municipality of Lassing near Selzthal, Rottenmann, Gröbming, Tauplitz and Wildalpen separately.
