Liezen combines historical insights with scenic trails and a wide range of activities. Anyone planning a trip involving culture, exercise and nature experiences will find a variety of options here for planning each day. Choosing a holiday apartment in Liezen can serve as a starting point for very different kinds of holiday days: following the traces of local history, cycling along the Enns or hiking to special viewpoints.

Culture and History in Liezen

A prominent historical landmark is the parish church in Liezen, which is dedicated to Saint Vitus. The originally Romanesque building was first mentioned in 1150. This gives the church a tangible connection to the town's long history. The Calvary Chapel on Salberg is also one of the cultural and historical sights worth seeing. It was probably built in the Baroque style in 1720. This cautious dating remains part of its documented history.

At Calvary Hill, culture and landscape come together. From the square in front of the Calvary Chapel, you can enjoy a view across the Enns Valley towards the Grimming and the Schladming Tauern. Another glimpse into the past awaits you at the Wöhr Forge. The old burgher's house with its forge has been preserved in its original form; the forge itself is fully equipped and contains all the tools and work equipment. The Africa Museum also features various trophies, weapons, photographs and records belonging to the African explorer Hermann von Wissmann.

Hiking, Panoramic Views and Alpine Pastures

The approximately three-hour Rote Wand Tour is suitable for a hike with several viewpoints. The circular trail offers views of the town of Liezen, the Grimming and the Dachstein. If you would rather plan a tour with a notable high point, the Lexgraben Tour reaches its highest point at 1,260 metres after approximately 1.5 hours. Towards the end, there is an opportunity to see the head of the Weißenbach Valley and its associated waterfall.

The municipality of Liezen also includes the Hinteregger Alm, a 184-hectare alpine pasture area in Styria. It lies north of Liezen at the foot of the Hochangern mountain range, at the southern end of the Totes Gebirge, at an elevation of approximately 1,150 to 1,350 metres above sea level. These different landscapes can help with planning your holiday: you can choose accommodation in Liezen and divide your days according to your interests between local history, circular trails, viewpoints and alpine pasture areas.

Cycling, Climbing and Tobogganing

Liezen is located on the Enns Valley Cycle Path R7. The cycle path runs away from public traffic along the Enns through meadows and fields and is particularly suitable for families. Another option is a mountain bike route more than 10 km long that leads to the alpine meadows of Hintereggeralm. Anyone looking for sporting variety unrelated to cycling can include the City-Rock Liezen climbing centre in their plans. Courses for beginners and advanced climbers are offered there regularly.

There is also a specific option for a winter outing: the Lexgraben natural toboggan run is located in Pyhrn, a district of Liezen, and invites visitors to go tobogganing. This means that trip planning can be adapted in different ways depending on the season and the desired pace, without restricting culture, landscape and activities to a single holiday pattern.

Liezen as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

Several connections are available for getting there. Liezen can be reached via the Ennstal Road B 320, the Pyhrn motorway A 9 and the ÖBB railway line from Linz to Selzthal. When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday house, you can therefore first consider which experiences should be the focus of your trip: historic buildings and museums, trails with panoramic views, cycling along the Enns or an excursion into the alpine pasture area. This allows you to adapt your choice of location to your planned daily itinerary, without all activities having to be of the same nature.

If you would like to compare other places for your trip, you can also find Altenmarkt, Trieben, Bad Aussee, Furrach, Bad Mitterndorf, Schildlehen, Mitterberg and Geiergraben here.
