Discover Knittelfeld through a range of interests for the day: the city park and swimming pool offer relaxation and leisure, while the defensive tower, carnival museum and cemetery church provide historical points of interest. Paths and routes add opportunities for outdoor activity towards Brunner Forest and Tremmelberg. This means your stay doesn’t have to revolve around just one theme. When planning, you can decide whether culture, green spaces, water or a tour should take centre stage.

Green spaces, water and paths

Knittelfeld’s city park covers 3.5 hectares, has a diverse range of trees and is a place to relax. A mini-golf course, a playground and the city park café add a variety of leisure options to the green space. For days out with children, you can combine different interests: a round of mini golf, time at the playground or relaxation in the park.

Knittelfeld swimming pool offers something different. Covering 20,000 m², it has an outdoor and indoor pool, a spacious sunbathing lawn and a leisure area with a slide. Unlike the city park, the focus here is on water and swimming; the sunbathing lawn adds space to relax. Details about these facilities may change. Check the latest information before visiting.

Brunnerkreuzallee, near Ziegelteich, connects Knittelfeld with Brunner Forest towards Tremmelberg. If you would rather take a named walk through the town, Knittelfeld City Walk offers a different route: it leads along Bahnstraße, Herrengasse, Frauengasse and the main square. The options therefore differ in focus from the outset—a link to the forest as opposed to a walk through streets and squares.

There is also a detailed route description for a bike tour: “Nimm´s Radl 08 – Knittelfeld Stadttour” crosses the Mur via a “floating bridge” and follows a gravel path to St. Margarethen. As this infrastructure feature may change, check the latest route information before setting out. The Tremmelberg route ends at the 42-metre-high “Turm im Gebirge” observation tower, built in 1999. From there, the view extends across Knittelfeld and the surrounding mountains.

History and special insights

At the start of Marktgasse stands the medieval defensive tower, the oldest building in Knittelfeld. The city walk takes you through streets and squares, while the tower offers a close-up look at the town’s architectural history. The carnival museum houses the entire archive of the BÖF, dating from the organisation’s founding in 1962. Here, the focus is on an institutional collection rather than a single building.

Cemetery Church of St. Johann im Felde also spans several periods: it is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and was built before 1224. It probably acquired its present appearance in the late 15th century. A statue of the Virgin Mary is part of the plague column, which was built between 1714 and 1718. These dates offer different points of reference for exploring Knittelfeld’s history, without conflating the construction date with the church’s present appearance.

The show apiary, which opened in 2022, offers a nature-related experience, with a bee education trail and a demonstration honey extractor. The two features have different focuses: the trail teaches visitors about bees, while the extractor offers a glimpse into honey production. At the OM Dairy Experience World, the themed journey runs from agriculture through variety and quality checks to processing and cheese tasting. Guided tours take place Monday to Saturday by telephone appointment; arrange your visit by phone.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your plans

If you’re travelling with children, the playground, mini golf, slide and bee education trail offer a range of ideas for days out together. To choose a holiday apartment, first decide which activities matter most to you: local history and a town walk, green spaces and the swimming pool, or paths towards the forest and Tremmelberg. Compare the accommodation’s location with your specific plans, then choose which themes you want your stay to centre on.
