Aflenz Kurort – Nature Trails, Bürgeralm and History

Aflenz Kurort is located on the southern flank of the Hochschwab massif in a climatically sheltered setting. The town combines mountain landscapes, forest paths, a spa park and a remarkable history. The Kneipp and bird nature trail offers further insights into nature. It features 20 information boards about frequently occurring bird species, complemented by nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds. The Aflenz region also has a medicinal herb trail with 9 marked stations where particularly large numbers of medicinal herbs can be found. Bürgeralm: Access and Mountain Tours

Aflenzer Bürgeralm is an important starting point for challenging tours into the nearby Hochschwab massif. When planning your day, you should take the current access situation into account: Lift operations to Bürgeralm were discontinued in March 2025. The mountain pasture can only be reached via the panoramic road, on foot or by bicycle.

The Bürgeralm panoramic road leads from Aflenz, below the Pierergut inn, at an elevation of 1,000 m to Bürgeralm at 1,500 m. The road is approximately 8 km long. On the southern side of Bürgeralm, there is also the approximately 400 m-long Panorama via ferrata. These specific details help you distinguish between a peaceful stay with shorter nature trails and trip planning focused on challenging mountain destinations. Spa Town, Park and Historical Testimonies

Aflenz was designated an air spa resort in 1920 and received the distinction of a climatic health resort at high altitude in 1979. The Aflenz provost's office also offers several points of historical interest. The north wing preserves a medieval structural design because the renovation and Baroque transformation by Domenico Sciassia between 1660 and 1693 remained unfinished. Until 1848, the entire Aflenz Valley was administered from the provost's office by the abbots of St. Lambrecht as landlords. The parish church of St. Peter in Aflenz was built around 1500 and is dedicated to Saint Peter. Guided tours with Aflenz night watchwoman Stefanie Tesch take place at regular intervals along the Historic Market Street.

For travelling to and connecting with other towns, bus routes 170/171 operate between Aflenz Kurort and Bruck an der Mur, Kapfenberg, Thörl, Turnau, Seewiesen, Gußwerk and Mariazell.
