Discover Gföll: trails, moorland and music
Accommodation in Gföll
In Gföll, reasons to visit range from hiking trails through the Schwarzbergklamm gorge and across a marshy valley floor to music history, cross-country skiing and mountain biking. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by asking whether trail destinations, the moorland landscape, cycling or local history should shape your stay. The different routes offer some concrete points of reference.
Hiking trails through varied landscapes
The “Gföller Mahder 1” hiking route leads from the Hintergföll inn through the Schwarzbergklamm gorge and past the Muckklause to the Gföller Mahder meadows. Another hiking trail near Hintergföll also has distinctive destinations: it starts near the disused marble quarry and leads to the Moarlack and the Hintergföll inn, a little farther down.
The Mäanderweg between Moosrem and the “Alpengasthof Heutal” offers a different landscape: it runs across the marshy valley floor. From the Moarlack, a hiking trail leads to the “Alpenwirtschaft Heutal” and back to the car along the level Mäanderweg through the high moor. Parking is permitted at the “Talbruck”; without stopping for a meal, this hike takes about two hours. A 30-minute, 1.5-kilometre trail leads to the “Gasthaus Wildschütz” in the Gföll district. These different time estimates can help you weigh up hikes based on how much of the day you want to spend walking. The roughly two-hour hike without a meal stop takes considerably longer than the 30-minute trail to the Gasthaus Wildschütz.
Cultural history: music and timber rafting
The “Gföller Musi” was officially founded in 1924. Traditionally, its musicians learned by ear and played every piece from memory.
At the Unken timber rafting site stands the Muckklause, an impressive stone-and-wood structure renovated in 1975. The former Gföll forester’s house, formerly known as Rauschgütl, also recalls a particular chapter in the area’s history: in the mid-19th century, Nikolaus Rainer sold it, together with 6 Joch and 980 square Klafter in Austrian units of measurement, to the Royal Bavarian Saltworks Treasury. The house is privately occupied today.
Cross-country skiing and mountain biking
From the Georg Flatscher ski school, you can go directly onto a 30 km cross-country ski trail. The mountain bike route starts in the valley at Unken and climbs via the Sonnberg to the Wildalm in Heutal. It is well developed and, according to its description, offers excellent views. So, in addition to hiking, cross-country skiing and a mountain bike route offer different activity options.
This suggests a practical question when looking for a holiday apartment: would you like to focus your stay on hikes and moorland trails, or would you also like to include cross-country skiing and mountain biking? This can help you assess Gföll in light of your own holiday plans and choose the features that matter most to you.
