Discover Zankwarn
Accommodation in Zankwarn
Zankwarn can be explored through several clearly identified attractions: a blessed weather cross, a farmstead, a Troadkasten (traditional grain store) and a seasonal field harvest. There are also various route descriptions. They offer different ways to shape your stay: culture, a time-specific experience or physical activity. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these experiences you want to define your days on holiday.
Culture in detail: the weather cross and farmstead
The Zankwarn weather cross was erected by residents of the village community and blessed on Good Friday 2021. A local description, updated in 2021, places it at the edge of the village, 200 metres from the turn-off to the children’s playground. This identifies both its community origins and a specific landmark in the village. The blessing dates the history of the cross, while the turn-off helps pinpoint its location.
The Federal Monuments Authority’s 2025 list of protected monuments includes the Zechner farmstead, comprising two farm buildings and a farm chapel. Unlike the individual weather cross, Zechner is a farm complex with several named components. A 2020 article in the Salzburger Nachrichten also places a Troadkasten in Zankwarn, a part of Mariapfarr. The cultural references differ in nature: the cross is described in terms of its origins and location, Zechner in terms of its structural components, and the Troadkasten in terms of its location.
Seasonal harvest at the Karlbauer farm
At the Karlbauer farm in Zankwarn, Mariapfarr, visitors can seasonally harvest ripe Lungau Eachtling potatoes directly from the field. This activity differs from the cultural attractions because it is time-specific: it depends on the season and cannot be assumed to be available on any travel dates. If you would like to plan your visit around the harvest, check in advance whether it will be possible during your stay. This makes the season itself a factor in planning your holiday.
Nordic walking and other routes
Two described Nordic walking routes pass through Zankwarn. Route 2 follows the Winkelweg to Zankwarn and then returns to Mariapfarr. Route 4 reaches Zankwarn, crosses the bridge there and returns to Mariapfarr. Both descriptions therefore have Mariapfarr as their return point; their distinctive route features are the Winkelweg and the bridge crossing. You can choose a tour based on the route described.
Another route passes through Zankwarn, crosses the road at a bridge and continues upstream through the Tiergraben into the Lignitz Valley. The description comes from an older tourism brochure. Check local trail conditions before setting out; this advice also applies to the two Nordic walking routes. For broad trip planning, the route back to Mariapfarr differs from the one that continues into the Lignitz Valley.
From planning your trip to finding a holiday apartment
When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to organize these differences around your own trip plans. The Eachtling harvest is seasonal; the cultural attractions include the weather cross, the Zechner farmstead and the Troadkasten; and the routes differ in their waypoints and whether they return to Mariapfarr or continue into the Lignitz Valley. This lets you connect your search for a holiday apartment with the dates and experiences you have in mind for your stay.
