Discover Mattsee: Abbey, Lake, Schlossberg and Buchberg

Mattsee combines ecclesiastical history, experiences on the lake and trails through a varied landscape. Lake Mattsee is one of the three Trumer Lakes and therefore offers various starting points for planning your trip: You can explore the history of the abbey and castle complex, follow trails on Buchberg or experience the lake on various types of watercraft. Abbey, Schlossberg and historical traces

The Mattsee Abbey Museum presents the history of the region and the abbey across 600 m² in 12 rooms. Its historical roots reach far back: Duke Tassilo III founded a monastery in Mattsee around 760. The abbey community continues to exist today and is the oldest community of diocesan priests in Austria.

Schlossberg also brings the town's past to life. Its medieval fortification was built around 1100. The largely reconstructed Schloss Mattsee castle complex is located on a peninsula that extends into Lake Mattsee east of the collegiate abbey. The grounds of Schloss Mattsee are used by the market town of Mattsee for cultural activities. The historic lido also recalls the 1920s. Its original structure has largely been preserved, and the lido is protected as a historic monument.

Another historical site is the Bavarian homestead. The open-air museum was built in 1988 as part of the regional Celtic exhibition. The Millennium Trail leads around Wartstein, along the promenade around Schlossberg and to the Bavarian homestead. The two circular trails feature a total of 38 information panels on natural and cultural history. This makes the route particularly interesting if you want to learn not only about the landscape along the way, but also about the connections between nature and local history.

Lake, views and trails on Buchberg

Lake Mattsee covers 3.6 km², is one of the warmest bathing lakes in the Salzburg region and is known for its particularly good water quality. Pedal boats, rowing boats and electric boats can be rented on the lake. Those who want to explore Lake Mattsee and its shores more actively can do so by surfboard or stand-up paddleboard. There is also a large children's playground in Weyerbucht.

For walks and short excursions, Buchberg Nature Park offers six themed trails, each of which can be explored on foot in 30 to 60 minutes. Buchberg itself is 801 m high; from its plateau, views extend to 120 mountain peaks from Traunstein to the Wilder Kaiser. This allows you to choose between manageable themed trails and a viewpoint with a far-reaching panorama, without limiting your trip to just one type of activity.

Experiences for curious families

fahr(T)raum presents a collection of historic vehicles and aircraft. Its interactive worlds offer insights into the beginnings of automobile manufacturing from 1899 onwards and into historic aircraft. Two large Carrera race tracks provide opportunities for everyone to try things out together. Up to four people can compete against each other on each two-lane track. Every day, children can take part in a quiz rally there, followed by a winner's photo and a medal ceremony.

PAPIER-art ART-papier also offers workshops year-round. These include an introduction to the history of paper, a guided tour of the paper manufactory, making handmade paper with natural materials and a visit to the paper exhibition. This allows active pursuits, technological history and hands-on crafts to be combined.

Mattsee as a starting point for planning your trip

The “Seenland” boat connects two lakes and three towns. With its raised roof lowered, it travels under the Johannis Bridge between Mattsee and Lake Obertrumer See.
