Sankt Veit im Pongau lies at an altitude of 763 metres on a mid-mountain terrace above the Salzach Valley. Its historic market square, Gothic parish church, traces of Bronze Age settlement and routes for cycling and hiking give the town many different facets. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to clarify what you have in mind: would you like to discover the town’s history, spend several days taking part in monastic life, or explore a cycling or hiking route?

Market Square, Church and Early Settlement Traces

The rectangular market square was laid out according to plan in the 13th century. Its shape offers a tangible way to explore the history of the town. There is also the parish church of Saint Vitus, a four-aisled Gothic basilica dating from around 1400. “Four-aisled” describes the layout of the church interior; “Gothic” identifies the building’s architectural style. The two dates invite comparison between the layout of the square in the 13th century and the church building from around 1400.

At Klinglberg, the history reaches further back: in the Early Bronze Age, from 2000 to 1500 BC, a settlement existed there in connection with copper ore mining in the area. Sankt Veit thus brings together different periods of history, without equating the Bronze Age settlement with the later town layout.

The Seelacken Museum complex in the spa park offers another cultural theme. It comprises the Wallner farmhouse, the Seelacken Mill, a granary, a farmhouse garden and a beehive display case. The collection takes visitors from the farmhouse through the mill and grain to the garden and bees. Alongside the history of the market square and church, it also offers tangible insights into rural life and related topics.

Monastic Life, Cycling Route and Hikes

Maria im Paradies Monastery was established in 1985 on the Kinderalm in Sankt Veit im Pongau, in the premises of a former pulmonary sanatorium. It is open to people who wish to take part in monastic life for a few days. This includes the Liturgy of the Hours, Mass, Scripture reading, adoration, silence and time in nature. Those seeking a spiritual, multi-day stay will find a different focus here than on a trip to see buildings or a cycling tour.

The Tauern Cycle Path passes directly through Sankt Veit im Pongau. There are several hiking options: the trail to Schneeberg starts at the Hubertus Chapel in Sankt Veit; conditions may vary by season. Another option starts at the Kinderalm car park. From there, a moderate ascent on a forest path leads to a summit. These starting points and trail features can help you plan cycling and hiking as distinct parts of your holiday. Check the current conditions on the trail to Schneeberg before setting out.

You can also get an idea of walking time from the market square: the Erzweg Kupfer route takes 60 minutes and covers 3.4 kilometres. So, in addition to the Tauern Cycle Path and hiking trails, there is also specific information about a walk starting at the market square.
