Muggendorf combines impressive waterfalls, short walks and longer mountain tours with a wide range of experiences in nature. The Myrafälle Waterfalls are a particularly prominent highlight: the water plunges over rock ledges into the depths for more than 125 metres, amounting to around 5,000 cubic metres per day. This gives you various options when planning your trip – from an interesting excursion to the waterfalls to a several-hour hike into the mountain world.

Myrafälle Waterfalls and Trails for Different Day Plans

The Myrafälle Waterfalls complex leads across 26 bridges and 8 stairways. The Austrian Tourist Club looks after, inspects and maintains these paths. The Myrafälle Waterfalls are open daily from 8 a.m. until nightfall. The Myrastubn restaurant is located directly at the entrance and serves regional, seasonal and traditional dishes.

Anyone looking for a shorter excursion can plan the circular hiking trail around the Hausstein. It starts at the Karnerwirt inn and takes around 45 minutes. The Hausstein itself is a distinctive rocky summit. From a viewpoint accessible via the easier side, the unobstructed view extends to the northern precipices of the Schneeberg. Climbing via the Direttissima is also possible on the 300-metre-wide southern wall.

Another short nature route is the approximately 2-kilometre circular trail of the Muggendorf Forest Educational Trail. More than 60 different species of trees and shrubs, along with numerous information and directional signs, make this a trail where you can consciously explore the forest landscape without covering a long distance.

Water, Views and Mountain Landscapes

From the Myrafälle Waterfalls, a blue-marked forest path leads to the Jagasitz in about one hour. From there, views open up across the entire Northern Limestone Alps foothills, including the Schneeberg and Rax. There is also a special activity at the Myrateich pond: the Myrafälle Hiking & Water World includes an adventure raft ride.

More challenging mountain destinations are also located within the municipality. The 1,079-metre-high Almesbrunnberg lies in the Gutenstein Alps. A large mountain meadow saddle just below the summit offers views of the Northern Limestone Alps from the Schneeberg to the Ötscher. The ascent leads through the Steinwandklamm gorge. A marked hiking trail from the former Jagasitz inn comes within about 300 metres of the mountain; the final section to the summit follows an unmarked path.

For a longer tour, you can consider the Unterberg mountain refuge. It is situated at an altitude of 1,190 metres, around 150 metres below the summit of the Unterberg, and is a destination for hikers, ski tourers and pilgrims travelling to Mariazell. From the village of Muggendorf, you can reach the refuge via the Enziansteig trail in about three hours.

Nature, Regional History and Local Special Features

In addition to trails and viewpoints, Muggendorf also offers small cultural points of interest. The Vinzenzi Kircherl chapel was completed in 2010 and dedicated to Saint Vincent of Valencia, the patron saint of woodcutters. The lime kiln is connected with the local tradition of lime burning, documented by J. A. Schultes in 1802.

When choosing your holiday apartment, it may be useful to first determine your preferred daily rhythm: the Myrafälle Waterfalls, the Forest Educational Trail and the Hausstein offer various shorter activities, while Almesbrunnberg and Unterberg require planning for longer hiking times. To travel to the Myrafälle Waterfalls, bus route 332 runs directly there from the Pernitz/Muggendorf stop; the journey takes about five minutes. In addition, a well-marked cycle path branches off in Pernitz and leads directly to the Myrafälle Waterfalls.

Circular Hiking Trail via Pernitz, Muggendorf and Gutenstein

An approximately 12-kilometre circular hiking trail connects Pernitz, Muggendorf and Gutenstein. This allows you to expand your trip planning beyond a single point of interest. Depending on the route you prefer, you can focus on a short waterfall excursion, a forest route or a longer mountain hike and align your search for suitable accommodation accordingly.
