Schliefau: Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Schliefau
Schliefau offers hiking trails with clearly distinguishable features: the Tabor Trail leads to a named destination, the Tut-Gut-Weg Hochkogelberg is a short loop, and the Mostweg connects old cider pear trees with a viewpoint. There is also a place to stop for refreshments and a complex local history. When choosing a holiday apartment in Schliefau, it may therefore help to first consider which of these experiences you want to shape your stay.
Trails with Different Features
The Tabor Trail follows a residential road to the Tabor and is considered family-friendly. If you are looking for a trail with a clearly named destination, this route may be a good choice. Along the way, you will find a place to stop for refreshments at the Schliefauhof (Eisenstraßenwirt), an inn and restaurant in Schliefau near Randegg that welcomes visitors. Check whether the restaurant is open before your trip.
The short Tut-Gut-Weg Hochkogelberg circular trail offers a different perspective. Starting at the Panoramastüberl, it passes the Sonnleiten Chapel and runs through lush alpine meadows around the Hochkogelberg; access to the meadows may vary seasonally. In contrast to the Tabor Trail, this route emphasizes its circular shape, the chapel and the alpine meadows, while the Tabor is named as the destination of the Tabor Trail.
The Mostweg is also quite different: old, gnarled cider pear trees characterize its route; most were planted during the reign of Maria Theresa. The Mostbrunnen on Denknöd Höhe is the highest point on the route and offers the best views. Here, a defining landscape feature meets a clearly designated viewpoint. The date applies to most of the trees, not necessarily to every single one. If you value tree-lined landscapes and views when hiking, this trail offers a different experience from the chapel loop on the Hochkogelberg.
Landscape and Local History
Schliefau’s history also includes the crime committed on 15 April 1945: SS members murdered Hungarian Jewish forced laborers in the so-called Schliefaugraben, including 46 children. The 2011 DÖW memorial inventory documents the perpetrators, victims, location and date. Precisely naming what happened gives a different perspective from the hiking trails and landscape, and is part of a complete picture of the place.
The Dominikus Chapel in Schliefau is another historical landmark. It is protected as a listed monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3. The official Lower Austrian list of monuments that records this status is dated 23 June 2026. The chapel’s listed status and the commemoration of those murdered are different aspects: one refers to the formal protection of a building, the other remembers people and a specific crime.
Choosing Schliefau as a Destination
If hiking is an important consideration for you, the destination trail, circular route and landscape offer concrete points of difference to help with your planning. The local history adds a distinct cultural dimension to this outdoor perspective. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether this combination of hiking trails and history should shape your stay.
