Lunz am See combines an emerald-green natural lake with mountain scenery, historic buildings and unusual nature experiences. Lake Lunzer See is Lower Austria’s only natural lake and lies at the foot of imposing mountains. This gives the area a varied setting for a trip where you can swim, hike, cycle and discover regional history. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home should therefore first consider which combination of water, activity and culture should shape their holiday.

Lake, Lakeside Stage and Nature Trails

The Lunz lido invites you to enjoy swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Lunzer See. The Lakeside Stage is also part of the lake experience: it was designed by wellenklængen in 2004 and built by the municipality of Lunz. During the day, it is accessible to bathers as a sun island. This allows active excursions to be combined with quieter hours by the water, without limiting the holiday to a single leisure activity.

For hiking enthusiasts, the options range from leisurely walks to challenging mountain tours and several alpine climbing routes. The Three Lakes Tour starts at car parks by Lake Lunzer See at an altitude of around 750 metres. When choosing a route for the day, you can therefore distinguish between a relaxed stroll, a longer hike or a more physically demanding activity. The Dürrenstein-Lassingtal Wilderness Area may only be entered as part of guided hikes and along marked trails. This rule is just as much a part of planning a day in nature as deciding which tour fits your own schedule.

Haus der Wildnis and Insights into the Primeval Forest

The UNESCO World Natural Heritage Centre Haus der Wildnis uses its exhibition and modern technology to provide unique insights into the largest primeval forest in the Alps in the Dürrenstein-Lassingtal Wilderness Area. Free car parks are available directly in front of Haus der Wildnis. The centre can also be reached by public transport via the Lunz am See Schulen bus stop. The Ybbstal Cycle Path passes Haus der Wildnis, making it possible to combine the nature theme with a cycling tour.

History at Amonhaus and the Hammerherren Museum

Lunz am See also has significant places to offer from a cultural and historical perspective. Meister Ofner had Amonhaus built in the Renaissance style in 1551. The manor house dating from the mid-16th century features an original smoke kitchen and magnificent rooms. At the Hammerherren Museum, special exhibits, clothing, pictures and documents provide an impression of the working and living conditions of the ironmasters as well as the farmers, charcoal burners and lumberjacks. The “Frauenkirche ze Lunz” was first mentioned in 1392. Anyone interested in regional history can include these sites as a separate focus in their travel planning.

Cycling and Special Excursions

The 55-kilometre central section of the Ybbstal Cycle Path between Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Lunz am See follows the route of the former Ybbstal railway. It is completely flat, runs away from car traffic and remains close to the river throughout. The Mostviertler Schienenradl offers a different experience: it starts at the railway station in Lunz am See and follows narrow-gauge railway tracks along the Ybbs towards Göstling, reaching the Klein Großau turnaround station after just under 5 kilometres. These two options represent different ways of experiencing the surrounding area.

When choosing accommodation, you can therefore use your preferred travel rhythm as a guide: the water and lido are ideal for relaxing days, the cycle path and Schienenradl for excursions on two special routes, while Haus der Wildnis, Amonhaus and the Hammerherren Museum add cultural and natural-history discoveries.
