Mödling combines the Vienna Woods with an unusually diverse cultural history. The approximately 350-hectare Mödling city forest lies entirely within the Föhrenberge Nature Park and the Vienna Woods landscape conservation area. There are also historic sites, museums, themed trails and regional wines. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Mödling can therefore tailor their stay entirely to their preferred pace of travel: with nature experiences, urban history, music and excursions into the surrounding area.

City forest, hiking trails and special viewpoints

The Mödling city forest has designated forest bathing areas with loungers, including one near the forest classroom above Meiereiwiese. For a hike, the Mödling “Tut gut!” hiking network offers three routes, all of which start at the Föhrenhof. The short route is barrier-free and passes the Mödling forest classroom and the salamander biotope. The longest and most challenging route leads to most of Prince Liechtenstein’s ornamental buildings, including the Black Tower, the spectacles and the Johannessteig.

A prominent destination is the Husarentempel at an altitude of 496 metres in the Föhrenberge Nature Park. It was built in 1813 by Joseph Kornhäusel as a “Temple of Military Glory” and is one of the eight towers on the themed hike “The Towers of the Vienna Woods”. One stage of this hike leads from Meiereiwiese in Mödling via the Husarentempel to Gumpoldskirchen. The Mödling circular hiking trail 448 also ends in Mödling via the Golden Stairway. These different route ideas help you choose between a shorter circuit, a more extensive hike and a themed route.

History, music and museums in Mödling

The city’s history goes back a long way. A collateral branch of the Babenbergs lived at Mödling Castle from 1177; during the first Siege of Vienna by the Turks, the castle burned down in 1529. Churches have stood on the site of St. Othmar’s parish church for more than 1,000 years. The present building is the seventh church to have stood here in uninterrupted succession.

Mödling is also closely connected with the history of music. At the Hafnerhaus, Beethoven worked on the Piano Sonata in B-flat major, Op. 106, the Diabelli Variations, Op. 120, the Mödling Dances and the “Missa solemnis”, Op. 123. Ludwig van Beethoven spent the summer months of 1819 there. Advance registration or an appointment is required to visit the Beethoven memorial site. A Beethoven discovery tour begins at Freiheitsplatz and leads via the district museum, the Beethoven sites in Achsenaugasse and Hauptstraße, to St. Othmar’s Church.

Arnold Schoenberg lived in the Schoenberg House from 1918 to 1925. Because of the compositional method developed there, the house is often referred to as the “birthplace of 12-tone music”; the permanent exhibition includes original furniture and original instruments. The City Transport Museum covers the Mödling–Hinterbrühl Electric Railway. The Museum of Folklore with its house garden focuses on forestry and agriculture, crafts and viticulture. The collection has been on display since 1984 in a vintner’s house dating from the 16th to 17th century and includes, among other things, a reconstructed 19th-century kitchen with a “Sparherd” stove.

Practical orientation for planning your trip

Mödling’s centrally located railway station connects Mödling with Vienna and Baden. Four audio guides with numerous stops throughout the city offer additional opportunities to explore the city independently. For days with changeable weather, Mödling’s municipal baths, built in the 1920s, offer ice skating in winter; the indoor pool is also open in winter. The municipal baths feature Austria’s first swimming hall outside Vienna and are considered the only baths in Austria to have preserved their distinctive Bauhaus style to the present day.

The vineyards around Mödling provide grapes for regional wines. In Mödling’s Heurigen taverns, you can experience the diversity of these regional wines at first hand. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore worth deciding on the focus of your trip: the city itself offers culture, museums and historic routes, while the city forest and themed hikes add nature experiences. The tourism information office in Mödling sells admission tickets and runs a shop for regional products.
