History Between the Castle, Market and Creative Culture

The history of the town dates back to the Middle Ages. Between the 11th and 13th centuries, Dietrich the First from the House of Hohenstaufen founded the Lordship of Hohenberg and had a castle built on what is now Schlossberg as his seat. The castle, situated high above the Traisen Valley, served to monitor and control the valley over a wide area. Travellers were controlled by the respective lord of the castle as they passed through the narrow valley at the foot of Schlossberg.

The town's development as a market town is also part of its history: The Hohenberg parish was founded in 1325, and in the same year Hohenberg already held market rights. During a culture-focused stay, the Catholic parish church of St James the Elder is also worth visiting. It is an Early Baroque hall church dating from around 1630 and is protected by ordinance as an immovable monument, as is the Kaiser Franz Joseph Jubilee Chapel from 1898. The house “Zum schwarzen Bären” at Markt 20 has a portal dating from 1604.

Hohenberg's creative character is shaped by the creative school. Courses in wood carving, pottery, painting and writing workshops are offered there throughout the year. Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

The route is approximately 8 km long, takes about 3.5 hours and leads around the creative village of Hohenberg. A shorter alternative is the “Nature as Art” route. It is approximately 5.5 km long, takes about 2.5 hours and follows easy hiking trails to the ruins, the Seebach and the waterfalls. This route is also particularly suitable for families. At the foot of the Ochsensattel are two waterfalls. The small Schleier Waterfall is visible from the road; a short path leads into the valley to the larger waterfall. There, shady picnic areas and shallow water invite visitors to linger.

Those who prefer longer mountain destinations will find a prominent point at the Hohenberger Gschwendt, at an elevation of 1,072 metres. The area lies along the Traisenberg–Paulmauer–Hohenberger Gschwendt high-altitude hiking route and is also used for ski touring in winter. The Reisalpe can be climbed from Hohenberg in the valley.

The surrounding area can also be explored by mountain bike. The Hinterberg mountain bike route is 11 km long and offers beautiful views, steep climbs and fast descents. For a different kind of day, the Voralpenbad is available: The heated swimming pool, surrounded by forest, has a buffet, a sunbathing lawn, a children's slide, a Hoppepuder inflatable cushion and table tennis. The pump track facility in Hohenberg replaced the former skate park and was completed in October 2022.
