In the climatically favoured valley basin of the Spitzbach Valley, the wooded foothills of the Waldviertel meet the sunlit landscape of the Wachau. Mühldorf lies on the Wachau Wine Road, six kilometres from the Danube. Wine-growing, hiking trails and architectural history give the town several distinct travel themes. When choosing your holiday apartment, you might therefore begin by deciding whether you want to focus on outdoor activities, historic sites or regional food and drink.

Landscape, Wine and Regional Produce

The highest vineyard in the Wachau wine-growing region is located on the southern slope of Mount Trenning. Local businesses in Mühldorf sell products made from fruit, such as wine, spirits and jam, throughout the year. Regional food and drink can thus become a travel theme in its own right. Mühldorf also maintains old rural customs through midsummer celebrations and harvest festivals. Wine-growing and these traditions highlight the agricultural side of the town, while the hiking trails offer other ways to shape your trip.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

Route 05 of the Wachau World Heritage Trail runs from Mühldorf to Maria Laach. Its named destination gives your hiking plans a specific point of reference. The Way of the Cross at Kalvarienberg in Unterranna has a different character: it begins beside the wayside shrine of Saint John of Nepomuk and follows a steep mountain path, passing nine open, masonry, semicircular Stations of the Cross before reaching the Baroque Chapel of the Crucifixion.

The two route descriptions offer different highlights: Route 05 focuses on the connection between Mühldorf and Maria Laach and its destination, while the Way of the Cross is defined by its steep path, its sequence of nine stations and the chapel. If you plan to walk the Way of the Cross, factor its steep terrain into your day. This will help you decide whether you are more interested in a route with a named destination or a religious path with stations.

Architectural History and Working Life

Trenninghof is a manor house in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wachau, located at the northern foot of Mount Trenning in the Spitzer Graben area of the market town of Mühldorf. Its present appearance dates to Renaissance alterations in the second half of the 16th century, when two more wings were added to the medieval manor house with its Gothic vaults. Trenninghof is privately owned.

Trandorf branch church is a former fortified church dedicated to Saint Ulrich. Its present Late Gothic layout probably dates to the early 16th century, after it was at least partly destroyed by the Turks in 1529. The history of work is also part of Mühldorf’s story: graphite mining is documented here from 1832 to 1968 and was one of the oldest mining operations of its kind in Austria. The histories of architecture and mining thus tell different chapters of the town’s story without merging into a single historical period.

Crafts and Finding Accommodation

The Bakery Museum in Mühldorf showcases the craft of baking across several centuries. Bread is still baked once a month in the 1625 clay oven. If you would like to include a baking day in your travel plans, check in advance for the next date.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Mühldorf, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: Route 05 offers a specific hiking option, while the churches, Trenninghof and mining history may appeal to visitors interested in culture. Wine-growing, fruit products and rural customs add another regional perspective to your trip. If you are planning with children, take the steep path into account when considering the Way of the Cross; this can help you choose activities together based on everyone’s interests and the route descriptions.
