Haugsdorf – Wine, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Haugsdorf
Haugsdorf combines viticulture, historic traces and varied trails with special excursion destinations. Of the approximately 547 hectares of vineyard area in the municipality, around 70 percent are red-wine vineyards and around 30 percent are white-wine vineyards. This clearly recognisable wine-growing character can be experienced not only in the landscape, but also in the cellar lanes, at cultural events and in personal stories connected with wine.
Wine Landscape and Trails through the Cellar Lanes
The cellar lanes in Haugsdorf are lined with acacia, walnut and chestnut trees. The connection between landscape and viticulture can be experienced particularly vividly on the ÖKO hiking trail on Hutberg. Information boards there illustrate the centuries-long development of viticulture and the work carried out in the vineyards over the course of the year.
The Große Kellertrift follows a picturesque trail of around 1 kilometre through a sunken lane to the 296-metre-high Hutberg. Guided explorations are offered by arrangement. The meeting point is the Keller-Wohlfühlplatz in the Große Trift, from where the route leads through the sunken lane up to Hutberg. At the Keller-Wohlfühlplatz in the Kitla-Keller, there are seating areas, information material about the region, as well as bicycle service equipment with a pump and tools.
A circular hike of around 5 kilometres starting at the municipal office in Haugsdorf offers a different perspective. It leads via the Große Kellertrift to the Freiheitskreuz and back around the Schatzweingärten. The Freiheitskreuz is equipped with a new access path and an agility trail. The viewpoint has a bench and offers long-distance views. The Pulkautal Wine Experience Tour also passes through Haugsdorf along its route.
Culture between the Church, Schüttkasten and Zülow
One of the prominent cultural destinations is the Gothic hall church. It is considered one of the few medieval churches to have preserved its original form. In the rectory opposite, some rooms contain frescoes comparable to the fresco decoration in the garden pavilion of Melk Abbey. The Stations of the Cross in Haugsdorf consists of 14 stations and extends for around 2 kilometres. It follows the Pulkau stream to the Mandl-Graben and continues to the Antonius Chapel before returning to the transformer station.
The former seigniorial granary acquired its Baroque appearance in 1726/28. The restored granary is used by the municipality as a village and cultural centre. Another cultural focus commemorates Franz von Zülow: He moved to Haugsdorf in 1909, where the “Monatshefte” were created by 1915 with the assistance of his mother Marie and his sister Mitzi. Annual exhibitions and guided hikes along the Zülow Trail, together with further activities, preserve the memory of the artist.
The annual “KUNST & WEIN” event also combines culture and wine. It takes place in mid-August in the Haugsdorf cellar lane and includes exhibitions and readings, as well as the enjoyment of select wines. A personal wine-growing story is associated with the Schöfmann wine cellar: this is where Anna and Laurenz Schöfmann decided to make their own wine.
Water, Views and Choosing Your Accommodation
The Haugsdorf Parkbad complements the trails and cultural destinations with a solar-heated outdoor pool. The facilities include a 35-metre-long water slide, a children’s pool and a lawn for sunbathing with a beach volleyball court. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the vineyards and Haugsdorf’s Hutberg. This means that, depending on your interests, your day’s plans can be extended with time spent by the water.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Haugsdorf, you can therefore consider which experiences should be the focus of your trip. Anyone wishing to discover viticulture and the landscape can include the cellar lanes, Hutberg and the signposted trail options in their plans. For days focused on culture, the church, rectory, granary and Zülow-related activities are ideal. Families can also consider the Parkbad with its children’s pool and water slide. The different trail lengths and the meeting point for the guided explorations help you prepare excursions suited to your own daily plans.
