Kirchberg Am Walde combines an impressive local history with trails through the landscape of the Waldviertel. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your trip, you can choose between cultural and historical discoveries, special natural attractions and active ideas for day trips. This makes the village an interesting starting point for a trip where every day does not have to look the same.
History around the Market Square and Churches
A good introduction to the history of Kirchberg am Walde is the Florianibrunnen fountain on the Market Square. The fountain dates from 1732 and was moved from the castle courtyard to the Market Square as part of redesign measures. Also on the Market Square, Kueffstein had the Trinity Column erected in 1714 out of gratitude. Its pedestal features reliefs of Saints Sebastian, Rochus and Rosalia, who were venerated as patrons against the plague.
Further historical points of reference span different eras. Kirchberg am Walde Castle was remodelled in the Renaissance style before 1561. The parish church contains a Gothic image of the Virgin Mary and four Renaissance tombstones from the old parish church. The hospital church belonging to the civic hospital is dedicated to All Saints and has a Baroque high altar. The civic hospital itself was commissioned by Count Johann Leopold Kueffstein and his wife Maria Franziska, née Countess Kollonitz, between 1715 and 1719 to care for their elderly servants.
Special Details Along the Way
Even smaller monuments tell stories of the village’s past. The pillory bears the year 1714 and served primarily as a punishment for minor offences; the hand and neck irons are still well preserved. The Leonhard Column was erected in 1770/71. The reason was a dangerous livestock epidemic that raged in Kirchberg for five months in 1766.
The Red Chapel was built in 1659 at a site where an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary had previously been attached to a tree. Its altar dates from the period between 1670 and 1680. About 1 kilometre in the direction of Ullrichs, two granite pillars approximately 5 metres high, tapering towards the top, stand in a small wood at the so-called Galgenberg. The municipality also contains Rauenstein Fortress, a former fortification with wall elements dating from the 13th century.
Cultural Walk and Landscape Experiences
For a structured exploration, there is the Kirchberg am Walde Cultural Walk. It starts at the Florianibrunnen fountain on the Market Square and includes 13 stations. A free Hearonymus audio app is also available for exploring the local history and culture. This allows you to incorporate the village’s history into your daily itinerary in different ways.
If you would also like to experience the landscape between the cultural topics, the tut gut Steps Trail offers another option. At the intersection with the road to Hollenstein, the trail crosses the European watershed and offers the opportunity to try forest bathing. On the road to Groß Höbarten lies the Kindlstein, a bowl stone found in the Waldviertel with a hollow that contains water all year round.
Cycling and Finding Suitable Accommodation
For a cycling trip, the Water Landscape Cycle Route passes through Kirchberg am Walde. It is around 85 kilometres long and is also suitable for riding in stages. Before searching for accommodation, you can therefore consider whether your focus is on local history, a day in the landscape, forest bathing or a cycling tour. You can then incorporate a holiday apartment in Kirchberg Am Walde into your travel planning to suit this personal mix, without cultural and nature experiences requiring the same itinerary.
