Sankt Andrä is situated on a river terrace above the Lavant in the Lavant Valley. Church art, local history and themed trails give the town several distinct aspects. When planning your trip, you can choose a focus: sacred art and historic traces, trails with different ways of presenting information, or a seasonal visit to a swimming spot.

Church Art and History

The cathedral is considered one of the oldest churches in the Lavant Valley. It contains remnants of 15th- and 16th-century frescoes depicting the Crucifixion of Jesus. There are also notable tombstones of bishops and provosts of the Diocese of Lavant. At the “History Room,” the history of Sankt Andrä is brought to life through exhibits, most of which belong to the municipality.

Maria Loreto is another prominent site in the history of sacred architecture: the pilgrimage and wedding church dates from the 17th century. Since July 21, 2014, it has been Carinthia’s second minor basilica, alongside Maria Luggau. Another historical trace is documented by date: a document from April 18, 1339, attests to Sankt Andrä’s fortification with a wall and moat. The Tränktor is the city’s last surviving historic entrance—a different way into the town’s history than the written record.

Town History Along Themed Trails

The St. Andrä Panorama Trail presents the city’s history, from its first settlement to the present day, on 14 steles. At each stele, visitors can use the “Cultural Places” mobile app to get information about the city and its surroundings. The Panorama Tour follows a different route: it passes through the town center and includes 15 unique interactive stations. You can choose between a historical sequence presented on steles with app-based information and a tour with interactive stations.

The signposted Kneipp circular hiking trail starts at the cathedral and passes through the “Forbidden Gardens” before returning to its starting point. The loop takes about an hour, with additional time needed to stop at the Kneipp stations. So if you want to use the stations, allow extra time for them.

The St. Andrä Bee Educational Trail starts at the St. Andrä Lake recreation area and is a 5.5-kilometer circular route. The recreation area is a swimming destination directly on the Lavant Cycle Path; swimming is available seasonally. Before your visit, check the seasonal operating schedule and bear in mind that local operating conditions for the Bee Educational Trail may change.

A Festival and an Apartment to Suit Your Trip

Gackern is a recurring festival in St. Andrä. Its 26th edition is scheduled for 2027. At the Loretowiese, visitors can enjoy chicken and turkey specialties. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for the 2027 edition before finalizing your travel plans.

When searching for an apartment, you can start by thinking about what matters most during your vacation: churches and an exhibition space for a culture-focused stay, the different trails for town history and outdoor activities, or the seasonal swimming destination. The stated duration of the Kneipp circular hiking trail and the length of the Bee Educational Trail offer different points of reference, without addressing the same kind of planning.
