Neuhaus: Discover Art, History and Routes
Accommodation in Neuhaus
Neuhaus offers plenty to discover: Gothic heritage, art, cycling routes and paths through forests and floodplain landscapes. The Water Adventure Trail leads to the Drava; KunstSinnNeuhaus am Weg connects the town with the Museum Liaunig. When looking for holiday accommodation in Neuhaus, it helps to consider whether you want to shape your stay primarily around art and history, cycling, or experiences of nature and water.
Art Between the Museum, the Trail and Architecture
The Museum Liaunig holds one of the most extensive collections of contemporary Austrian art from 1945 onwards. In the 2026 season, it is open from 26 April to 31 October, Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm. Check the opening times again for later seasons.
KunstSinnNeuhaus am Weg connects the town of Neuhaus with the Museum Liaunig. The 1.2-kilometre sculpture and family motor skills trail brings the theme of art outdoors. Another artistic encounter is “Leuchtturm/Svetilnik” by Bernhard Wolf at the Neuhaus transformer station: the inscription “+15 °” addresses the climate crisis. The Sunbeam Tower also makes a striking impression. It was built from larch wood in 2021; its shadows move throughout the day like those of a sundial.
Gothic Traces and Local History
Neuhaus/Suha Parish Church is a Gothic church dating from the second half of the 14th century. Its Gothic wall paintings date from around 1400. The two dates each add a distinct historical note: they distinguish the building from the paintings that give it its character.
Another focus of local history is Bach. The Patek Mill was built there in 1853, revitalised in 1992 and converted into a farming museum in 1996. In Schwabegg, a memorial at the cemetery commemorates the composer Anton von Webern. These places offer different ways to explore the past: through architecture and painting, the development of a mill, or the commemoration of an individual.
Forest, Water and Activity
The Pudlach/Neuhaus Water Adventure Trail leads through the forest to the Drava, to the mouth of the Motschula Stream, and along the stream’s floodplain landscape. There is a Kneipp trail along the route, and a zip line for children at the end. The same route thus combines water and landscape with a Kneipp experience and an attraction specifically intended for children.
The Neuhaus Sun Meadow is open to the general public and visitors. Guided wild herb walks are offered there in summer; if you are planning to join one, check the specific dates in advance. In Schwabegg, the sports and leisure facility includes, among other things, a drinking fountain, goals, floodlighting and a beach volleyball net. If any of these features is important to your visit, it is worth checking the current facilities.
Cycling and Regional Traditions
The Drava Cycle Path runs directly through Neuhaus; this is Stage 5. The “Art Cycle Route” is separate: cyclists can join it at the Santa Lucia Suspension Bridge, which lies on the municipal boundary of Neuhaus. Neuhaus is also a member municipality of the Karawanken UNESCO Global Geopark. This makes it possible to plan a cycling-focused stay separately from an art- or nature-focused one, without confusing the two cycle route connections.
Regional cuisine also has its own established highlights. The traditional Hadn Festival is held every year in September as a food festival featuring local restaurants and direct marketers. If you want to plan your stay around it, check the specific event date. Visitors can sample Had’n-Kranznudeln at the Had’n hosts in Neuhaus. Local specialities thus complement the choice between art, history, activity and nature.
