Villach: Animal Encounters, Culture and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Villach
Those who choose Villach as a travel destination can tailor their holiday to a wide range of interests: animal encounters, cultural history and mountain trails each offer a different focus. Specific destinations range from the labyrinth between the castle and animal park to historic sites, hiking trails and winter activities.
Animal Encounters and Unusual Details
At the petting zoo in Rosegg Animal Park, visitors can stroke and feed sheep, goats, donkeys, llamas and other domestic animals. This makes meeting the animals an engaging experience. Between the castle and the animal park lies the Rosegg Labyrinth, with more than 3,000 hornbeams. The animal park and labyrinth therefore offer two different focuses: one centres on direct contact with domestic animals, while the other takes visitors along a path through a dense maze of hornbeams.
Cultural History at Specific Sites
Arnoldstein Monastery Ruins date back to a once-powerful Benedictine monastery with a history spanning 800 years. Numerous events have made the site a cultural centre of Arnoldstein in recent years; restoration of Arnoldstein Monastery Castle began in 1993. The Arnoldstein Bunker Museum presents a different period in history: it features an original military fortification built between 1963 and 1995, with various bunkers, prepared positions and Cold War barriers.
Smaller buildings and local traditions also tell stories of different eras. The Arnoldstein Shot Tower was built in 1814 as a shot factory on the remains of Fuggerau Castle, which the Fugger brothers had built in 1495. Thörl-Maglern’s Church of St Andrew has Gothic interior frescoes by Master Thomas von Villach, an artist of the 15th century. The Untergail Valley festive costume was added to Austria’s national register of intangible cultural heritage in 2018. The small Gailitz church, meanwhile, was built in 1490 as a pilgrimage church and is dedicated to St Mary. A constructed footpath near the church offers a view over the villages of Gailitz and Arnoldstein.
Everyday history is the focus of the Thörl-Maglern General Store Museum. It is housed in a building that has served as a commercial premises for more than 300 years; visitors can learn which products people bought in this shop in the time of Maria Theresa. Around 3,000 years ago, members of an upper social class in Frög were buried beneath enormous burial mounds with precious grave goods such as jewellery and weapons. A magnificent lead hearse, unique in Europe, was also found there. The Frög Celtic World brings the mysterious era of the Hallstatt culture to life. In Nötsch im Gailtal, the Nötsch Circle Museum focuses on Austrian art history: it opened on 16 May 1998 and is particularly shaped by four painter friends. Terra Montana complements these historical insights with 14 stations on historical and modern mining methods and the lives of miners.
Mountains, Trails and Outdoor Activities
Those looking to focus on outdoor activities will find a range of ways to get moving. The Dobratsch has been protected as a nature park in Carinthia since 2002. On the Gerlitzen Alpe, paved panoramic and themed trails invite visitors to stroll and linger. The ski network includes 34 runs of all difficulty levels across 53 kilometres of impeccably groomed pistes, as well as 12 kilometres of natural ski routes. For specific winter plans, check the latest information on the available pistes.
One named hike with a specific duration is the Austria-, Slovenia- & Italia-Runde: it is 6.87 kilometres long and takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes. From Finkenstein, the Alpe Adria Trail offers a hiking option; the Kanzianiberg is a climbing option there. Alongside paved walking paths, visitors can therefore choose a longer hike with a more precise time estimate or a climbing destination.
The Alpe-Adria Cycle Path also offers a framework for planning. New sections have been built near Arnoldstein and elsewhere and connected to existing cycle paths. To return to the starting point, you can travel by train or by bike bus; bike buses must be booked in advance. As transport services and booking conditions can change, check the latest connections and reservation information before setting out.
Water, Winter and Regional Dining
Four lidos at Lake Faak provide practical facilities. The unspoilt Aichwaldsee is a place to go ice skating and play ice hockey in winter, weather permitting. These activities offer different kinds of experiences: visits to the lidos suit those interested in spending time by the water, while activities at Aichwaldsee depend on winter conditions.
At the Dreiländereck Hut, the menu includes open-faced sandwiches and the culinary variety of a Carinthian snack platter. As the food on offer may change, it is advisable to check what is currently available before your visit.
Choose Your Holiday Apartment Focus
The options range from animal encounters and local history to hiking, winter sports, cycling and water-based activities. When searching for a holiday apartment in Villach, it helps to first consider which of these interests you want to shape your holiday. Those who mainly want to discover culture will have different priorities from those who plan their stay around mountain trails or winter activities. This way, you can choose a destination based on the experiences that matter to you.
