Straßburg brings together castle history, culture and trails that start at different points around the town. The wildlife park’s pastures lie around the castle, and several routes lead to it. There are also collections, events in the castle courtyard and the outdoor pool at the leisure complex. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider whether history, trails or leisure activities will shape your stay.

Straßburg Castle: History and Opening Hours

By around 1147, Straßburg Castle already had a mighty curtain wall. Apart from the stable and storehouse in the northwest and the servants’ building in the southwest, the complex had largely reached its present extent by then. The curtain wall and this early layout offer concrete points of reference for the castle’s history.

From May to September, Straßburg Castle is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; last admission is at 5:00 p.m. Check the seasonal opening hours before travelling.

Culture from Textiles to Pipes

Straßburg is considered a former centre of ecclesiastical and spiritual life in Carinthia. Its cultural offerings range from historic textiles to an exhibition of pipes from around the world. The Werkmann Collection includes textile treasures from the Biedermeier period through to around 1940/50. Hermann Sabitzer’s pipe exhibition features countless pipes from around the world.

Exhibitions featuring works by renowned artists are also regularly held in the courtyard of Straßburg Castle, along with classical and jazz concerts, readings and plays. The specific programmes may vary. If you would like to include a cultural event in your stay, check the relevant dates.

Puzzle, Herb and Fitness Trails

The Straßburg puzzle trail starts right at the main square and leads up the mountain to the castle, with 20 questions about Straßburg along the way. It was laid out by the Straßburg Rural Youth Association in summer 2021. Its questions give the trail its distinctive puzzle theme.

The Straßburg Castle herb trail starts directly in front of the town council offices and leads to the castle via the Maria Loretto Chapel. The two routes can be distinguished by their starting points and trail features: the puzzle trail centres on the main square and its 20 questions, while the herb trail starts at the town council offices and passes by the chapel.

Another route to the castle is the fitness trail laid out by Straßburg Middle School. It leads from the foot of the castle hill to the castle and comprises 12 stations. At the stations, exercises can be accessed as videos via QR code.

Wildlife Park and Outdoor Pool

The Schloß Straßburg Wildlife Park has around 7 ha of pastureland surrounding the castle. Animals in the enclosure include fallow and red deer, mouflons, yaks, Cameroon sheep and pygmy goats. The animal population may change.

The outdoor pool at the Straßburg leisure complex offers views of Straßburg Castle and the thousand-year-old church in Lieding. It adds another leisure destination to the town’s historic and cultural highlights.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use your planned activities as a starting point: the castle and events involve seasonal opening hours and changing programmes, while the trails differ in their starting points and route features. If culture is your priority, take opening hours and event dates into account; for choosing a route, the respective starting points and stops are useful guides. This will help you decide which location suits your planned stay.
