Sankt Martin an der Raab lies in the southeast of Burgenland, amid a quiet, densely forested landscape of rolling hills at the Austria-Hungary-Slovenia tripoint. Roman traces, historic places of remembrance and artistic themes give the town many different sides. You can tailor your stay to what interests you most: archaeological history, landscape or cultural activities.

Roman Traces and Places of Remembrance

The remains of a Roman estate, including a residential building and several farm buildings, have been located in the market municipality of St. Martin an der Raab. Other Roman remains include burial mounds and tombs on a terrace running from east to west. They were identified and partly excavated there, forming a burial road. The various buildings and burial sites offer different insights into the town’s Roman past.

The three-kilometre Roman Trail features informative stops. The latest finds from the excavations are displayed in the Roman Museum on the main square, next to the farm shop. The finds currently on display may change. The wayside chapel in Sankt Martin an der Raab has two frescoes that most likely date from the time it was built, around 1812, and depict Saint Martin and Saint George.

A memorial stone was erected on the hilltop at the 3-country border point (A-H-SLO) in 1922. At the time, it symbolised the three successor states to the Habsburg Empire. After the fall of the Iron Curtain and Hungary and Slovenia joining the EU, the border point developed into a shared memorial site for international understanding. In Slovenia, it is registered as a cultural monument. The site thus brings together memories of an earlier political order and its later role as a shared memorial.

Landscape, Views and Historic Buildings

Stoagupf is a volcanic cone with a long history of settlement: one of Burgenland’s oldest Neolithic hilltop settlements was located there; in the Middle Ages, it was home to a central fortification with a simple rampart-and-ditch system. Its viewing platform offers views of the surrounding landscape by day and by night. The Augenquelle (Eye Spring) is another feature of the landscape: its water was tested and found to be drinking water of the highest quality.

In Eisenberg an der Raab stands a protected old clay granary with a thatched roof, dating from the 18th century. It once served as an agricultural storehouse and can be reached via the “Hexenweg” (Witches’ Trail). The building combines a historic architectural style with a concrete reminder of its former agricultural use.

Artistic Themes and Creative Workshops

The artists’ studios in the artists’ village of Neumarkt an der Raab have been shaping cultural history for more than 50 years. Art courses led by internationally renowned artists are held there as part of the Summer Academy. Those interested in artistic work will find a different focus here than in the archaeological and historical themes.

Erbe & Saponi offers workshops on soap making, distilling aromatic plants and composing your own perfumes. In a former cowshed, the company makes pure vegetable-oil soaps and natural skincare products from high-quality natural ingredients. The offerings range from practical workshops to the products made there.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Plans

If you want to focus on archaeological traces and border history, you may be interested in different topics than if you prefer views, historic buildings or artistic work. Consider which experiences you want to shape your stay, and choose your accommodation to suit your specific plans.
