Discover Güssing: Castle, Nature and Culture

Güssing combines impressive history with experiences in nature and a diverse cultural offering. From Güssing Castle, the view stretches across the town, the Güssing Fish Ponds Ramsar site and far into the Hungarian Plain. At the same time, exhibitions, historic buildings, hiking trails and events invite you to get to know the town from different perspectives. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Güssing can therefore plan their stay according to their own interests, combining culture, activity and enjoyment of nature.

Güssing Castle and Historical Discoveries

The castle is an important starting point for a visit. A funicular provides comfortable access to the castle without having to tackle the steep ascent. The Güssing Castle Museum is open from 14 March to 31 October 2026, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 17:00; the last admission is at 16:30. You should take these times into account when planning your day.

The permanent exhibition “The Pelican over Güssing” is part of the castle. In nine exhibition rooms, you can learn more about the history of the Batthyány family and Güssing Castle. The exhibition is presented in German, Hungarian and English. This also gives groups travelling together a practical way to explore the history of the place, regardless of whether everyone prefers the same language.

Another historical highlight is the Franciscan Monastery. It was founded in 1648/49 by Adam Count Batthyány I and houses a library with 3,500 books. The crypt of the Franciscan Church and Güssing Monastery is the final resting place of the Batthyány countly family. After the Capuchin Crypt in Vienna, it is the second-largest family crypt in Austria.

The old court mill houses the Emigration Museum and the second part of the exhibition, dedicated to Josef Reichl. The Emigration Museum documents the emigration of thousands of people from Burgenland, mainly to the USA, at the beginning of the previous century. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the Güssing dialect poet Josef Reichl, who described the fate of the inhabitants of the border region in his works.

Nature, Trails and Special Perspectives

For a quieter day, the circular hiking trail around the Güssing Fish Ponds Ramsar site is an ideal choice. The trail invites you to enjoy nature at a gentle pace and provides information about the area's natural treasures. Those who prefer longer excursions will find a starting point in Güssing for extended hikes or cycling tours through the Weinidylle Nature Park.

The traces of botanist Carolus Clusius also make the town an especially engaging place to explore. Seven information boards distributed throughout Güssing tell the story of his life, work and significance. Along the Carolus Clusius stations, flowerbeds display typical plants according to the season that Carolus Clusius discovered or catalogued. This allows you to combine a town walk with botanical impressions.

Cultural Centre and Travel Planning

Güssing Cultural Centre has been in existence since 1977 and offers a broad programme across several stages and event spaces. Well-known musicals are performed at the cultural centre every year. If you would like to combine your stay with an evening of culture, it is worth including the events programme in your travel planning.

When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide on your preferred travel rhythm: the castle, monastery and museums are ideal for a focus on cultural history, while the fish ponds and nature park are suited to days spent in the countryside. A holiday apartment in Güssing can serve as a base for the different interests of your travel group, without restricting your stay to just one type of experience. Depending on your interests, you can incorporate the different themes into your daily plans.

You can discover further destinations via the following places: Sankt Michael Im Burgenland, Eisenberg, Gaas, Sumetendorf, Ollersdorf Im Burgenland, Wörterberg, Strem, Gerersdorf Bei Güssing.
