Trausdorf an der Wulka: Art, Chapels and the Wulka

Trausdorf an der Wulka combines church and local history with outdoor art, nature along the watercourse and regional wine. The town’s most distinctive historic building is the Catholic parish church of Saint Lawrence. The late Baroque church was built between 1764 and 1767 on the remains of an older church and the Michaeler Chapel. The church tower was added in 1769. Another monument stands directly in front of the municipal office in a small green area: the plague column from 1680. Its square pillar is decorated with garlands of fruit and bears a capital with an angel’s head. The group of figures depicts the Queen of Heaven, Saint Rosalia, Rochus and Sebastian. The chapels also offer distinct points of interest. The Hubertus Chapel, built in 1993, commemorates its special dedication with the names of deceased hunters engraved on a stone plaque. A rest and barbecue area is situated immediately beside it in a light woodland.

The Magdalene Chapel on Magdalenagasse lies close to the town centre and offers a view towards the Wulka. The Baroque building with its semicircular apse was erected in 1747. Inside is a large fresco of Saint Magdalene by the Croatian painter Milan Generalic, complemented by four additional frescoes. In the Chapel of the Cross, which was extensively renovated in 2011, the valuable life-size crucifix above the altar deserves attention.

Art Mile, Wulka and Nature

The Trausdorf Art Mile is ideal as a day activity combining movement and art. It consists of a hike approximately 2 kilometres long. The sculptures are located on both banks of the Wulka between the main-road bridge and the small footbridge at the level of the cemetery. The specific route length helps you take the desired walking distance into account when planning your day. The Siedlerweg Poljanci trail also passes through Trausdorf an der Wulka.

The Wulka also shapes the development of the local riverbanks. As part of their redesign to improve flood protection, many new trees were planted. The Trausdorf Hutweide is also home to one of Europe’s largest souslik populations. Alongside the historic buildings, the watercourse, woodland and a distinctive animal population therefore provide opportunities to explore the town with a focus on nature.
