Shetaj: Holiday apartment between coast and culture

Shetaj represents the interplay of coast, nature and history. The area around the town is home to landscapes and structures that reveal different aspects of the Albanian Adriatic coast.

Culture and history

Rodon Castle was built on the orders of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg in the 15th century as a defensive fortress against Ottoman conquerors. According to historical tradition, Rodon Castle was the place from which Skanderbeg and his family set out for Brindisi in 1466. The fortress offers opportunities for historical exploration and connects the town with an important chapter in the region's history.

St. Anthony's Church is located near Rodon Castle. It is a cultural monument of historical and architectural value. Another religious site is St Ndoit's Church, which is designated as a religious monument dating from the 14th century. Both structures add to the historical dimension of the area around Shetaj, without their significance being limited to a single era.

Coast and nature

Kepi i Rodonit is a rocky peninsula in the Adriatic Sea on the northern edge of the Bay of Durrës. The peninsula lies between the Bay of Rodon and the Bay of Lalzi. At the same time, Kepi i Rodonit is a named cape in the vicinity of Shetaj.

The landscape at the cape also includes sandy beaches. Kepi i Rodonit also offers opportunities for walks in nature and hiking. This means that different ways of experiencing the same coastal landscape exist side by side: open stretches of beach and paths leading through the natural surroundings. Kepi i Rodonit has the protected status of a “natural monument”.

Landscape

The wider landscape around Shetaj includes several named elevations. Mali i Kërçokës is a named mountain in the vicinity of Shetaj. Kodra e Kritshës is a named summit in the wider regional surroundings of Shetaj, as is Maja e Gjonmit. The three names represent different geographical references: from the immediate surroundings of the town to the wider regional area.

Getting around

The Shetaj–Kepi i Rodonit coastal hiking trail begins at the entrance to Shetaj. It initially follows a dirt track and then continues along the coast to Rodon Castle and St. The route returns to Shetaj via the road. Its course therefore connects the town, the coast and two historical destinations in a fixed sequence.
