Nature
Sarandë’s City Promenade runs along the Ionian coast and is ideal for walks by the sea. Along the promenade, there are also opportunities to enjoy coffee and dinner by the sea.
Culture and Culinary Delights
The history of the town dates back to Onhezmi, the ancient name of present-day Sarandë. Onhezmi developed into an important port on the Ionian Sea and was a strategic point for trade and maritime connections between Epirus and other areas of the Mediterranean region.
The ruins of the Ancient Synagogue are located in Sarandë. The Monastery of the 40 Saints, a religious and historical monument from the Middle Ages, is also located in the Sarandë area. Lëkurës Castle stands in the vicinity of Sarandë; it was built in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent during the Ottoman period. From there, visitors can enjoy panoramic views over the city, the coast and the Ionian Sea. At Isak Winery, guests can sample local products.
Getting Around
Sarandë is compact, and many areas are car-free or designed for pedestrians, making the city easy to explore on foot. From Sarandë city centre, a bus runs hourly along the coast towards the island of Ksamil and onward to Butrint. This provides both routes within the city and a regular connection along the coast to the destinations mentioned.
Sarandë’s tourist information centre provides information about the city and regional attractions and offers maps and other visitor materials. From Greece, travellers continue to Sarandë via the ports of Corfu and Igoumenitsa.
