Udënisht combines impressive natural formations with traces of a settlement history stretching far back into the past. In the administrative unit of Udënisht, Shpella e Mëmëlishtit is classified as a geomonument. Other sites include the prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement of Udënisht 1, the Chalcolithic settlement of Zagradia, and the Early Christian Basilica of Lin. The individual sites do not tell the same story: their dimensions, dates, and current access conditions each set their own accents.

Nature

Shpella e Mëmëlishtit is a karst cave measuring 400 metres in length and 10 metres in width. It is approximately 25 metres high. The interplay of these three measurements makes the cave particularly easy to understand as a natural phenomenon: it is not only elongated, but also has a clearly described width and considerable height. Its classification as a geomonument places it within a special geological natural heritage, while the designation as a karst cave situates its formation in a characteristic rocky landscape.

The described route follows a clear sequence. You can travel by any vehicle as far as the village of Mëmëlisht; from there, an uphill walk leads to the cave. The final section therefore consists of a footpath uphill and begins immediately after the drive to the village.

Culture and history

The prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement of Udënisht 1 was discovered in spring 2017. It stretches parallel to the shore for 160 metres, is approximately 50 metres wide, and lies 80 metres from the shore. Radiocarbon dating places Udënisht 1, with a probability of 95.4 percent, in the period from 1500 to 1311 BC. Thus, both the settlement's spatial extent and its precisely defined date are central to its significance.

Another archaeological trace is the Chalcolithic settlement of Zagradia. Seven stone tools from this settlement are kept in the museum of Pogradec. The settlement itself cannot currently be visited because it is covered by the lake's waters. Zagradia is therefore known today primarily through the surviving tools and the place where they are kept, while the settlement site lies beneath the water's surface.

Visiting the site

The Early Christian Basilica of Lin consisted of seven rooms. The floors of all the rooms were completely decorated with mosaics. The ruins were restored in 2008. Only one mosaic in the narthex is open to visitors; it measures one square metre. This site therefore brings together the basilica's architectural layout, its extensive mosaic decoration, and one clearly defined visible mosaic.

The Basilica of Lin can be reached by car or bus in approximately 20 minutes. From the village of Lin, the subsequent walk to the basilica takes no more than 10 minutes. Both time estimates describe the sequence of travelling by motor vehicle followed by the final stretch on foot, with the travel time given approximately and the walking time stated as an upper limit.

Another aspect of a stay is offered by Rei Camping Bar-Restaurant. It has a tradition dating back to 1998 and offers a comfortable setting on the shore of Lake Ohrid as well as traditional dishes. The venue thus combines its long-standing culinary tradition with a lakeside location and a cuisine focused on traditional food.
