Tepelenë combines a distinctive riverside location with places where the city’s history can be seen in concrete form. The city’s name is particularly closely associated with Tepelena Castle: Ali Pasha Tepelena, who was born in this city, rebuilt Tepelena Castle in 1819 and expanded it into its present form. Tepelena Castle is a cultural monument.

Culture and history

At the entrance to the city is the Tepelena Historical Museum. Its archaeology pavilion contains objects from the Bronze Age, while a separate Ali Pasha Tepelena pavilion is dedicated to the ruler born in Tepelenë. Lord Byron Square is also located in the historic center of Tepelena. Other historical sites include Ali Pasha's Mill, an example of an Albanian watermill from the 18th and 19th centuries. The mill is open to visitors and is located about one kilometer from Tepelenë’s main square.

Rivers and historical sites

Tepelenë lies at the confluence of the Vjosa and Drino rivers. The city’s tourist attractions include a promenade along the Vjosa River. Tepelena Castle offers panoramic views over the city of Tepelena and the Vjosa River. Below Tepelena Castle, the Beçisht Bridge crosses the Vjosa; its present form dates back to its reconstruction by Ali Pasha Tepelena in 1819.

Memorial sites

The Tepelena Camp was established between 1949 and 1954 in former Italian barracks. Today it serves as a memorial and study site and is visited by tourists.

Landscape and activities

In the Tepelena area, the Nivica Canyons and Peshtura Waterfall near the village of Nivica offer opportunities for hiking and adventure exploration. Both destinations mentioned are linked to the village of Nivica and complement the city’s historical sites with a natural dimension.

Getting there

From Gjirokastër, Tepelenë can be reached via the national road along the Drino Valley. The journey of approximately 40 kilometers is stated to take around 40 minutes.

Included services, individual price components, and booking and cancellation conditions are equally important. Check these points directly in the specific offer: This way, you can see what is actually stated without adding features. Therefore, check the fields mentioned directly in the respective listing before making your decision, and keep the choice of location separate from the features of the offer. Also pay attention to which services are included in the price and which price components are listed separately. For booking and cancellation conditions, the exact wording of the listing is what counts. This keeps the comparison limited to verifiable fields and avoids mixing assumed features with what the offer actually states. You can also check the exact accommodation type, the stated occupancy, and the total price with its respective individual components. The stated location and the specific cancellation deadlines should also be clearly identifiable in the listing. Compare such fields only where they are explicitly mentioned, and leave unlisted features open.
