Holiday apartment in Berat: UNESCO Old Town and Ottoman architecture

Over the centuries, Berat has been shaped by the coexistence of different religious and cultural communities. This history is particularly evident in the city centre: here, a vernacular residential architectural tradition of the Balkans is reflected in houses arranged in tiers along the slopes. The surviving examples date predominantly from the late 18th and 19th centuries and give the cityscape a clearly recognisable historical structure.

Culture

Among the notable buildings is the Pasha's Gate, a first-category cultural monument and a work of Ottoman architecture from the second half of the 18th century. At the same time, it is the only surviving evidence of a palace complex that once stood in this part of Berat's lower town. Art enthusiasts can visit the Edward Lear Art Gallery, which has four halls displaying works by local and international visual artists.

The Old Town preserves its traditional urban structure and forms part of the UNESCO-protected urban area. Within Berat Castle, there were once around 42 churches dating from the early Middle Ages to the 15th century; approximately eight of them have survived to the present day. The castle is elevated and offers panoramic views over the historic city of Berat.

The museums also take visitors through different eras. The Ethnographic Museum is housed in a representative 18th-century building of Berat's traditional architecture. On the ground floor, it recreates a medieval bazaar with craft tools, traditional costumes, household items and everyday objects. The upper floor presents typical rooms of a house in Berat from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The National Iconographic Museum “Onufri” is located in the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary within Berat Castle. It displays around 200 iconographic and liturgical objects dating from the 14th to the 20th century. The collection also includes the UNESCO-protected manuscripts Codex Purpureus Beratinus from the 6th century and Codex Aureus of Anthimos from the 9th century. The Gorica district is designated as a museum area.

In Mangalem stands the Bachelors' Mosque, built in 1827 for the unmarried craftsmen of Berat. It is known for its paintings and frescoes with floral motifs. Also located in the Mangalem district is the Church of Saint Michael, a 14th-century Orthodox church built on a rock. Its Byzantine masonry combines courses of bricks with courses of stone.

Nature and cityscape

Berat lies on both banks of the Osum River below the castle hill. The Gorica Bridge was built of stone in 1777 by Ahmet Kurt Pasha, replacing an earlier wooden bridge. It is 127 metres long and has seven semicircular arches. The bridge is also associated with the ritual of throwing a cross into the Osum River on 6 January.

For walks and more relaxing hours, the “Dua Të Luaj” recreation park is available. The park has more than 300 trees and green spaces for walking and relaxation. It also offers a free running track and a free outdoor gym.

History and memories

The Solomon Museum documents the presence and lives of Jews who settled in Berat or sought refuge there over the centuries, particularly during the Second World War. In doing so, it complements the city's architectural and religious heritage with the history of a community whose lives were connected with Berat.

Cuisine

Restaurants in Berat serve traditional dishes from the local cuisine, including Përshesh with turkey, accompanied by locally produced grape wine. The Culinary Tour includes a cooking workshop at an agritourism establishment or a traditional house, where typical recipes from Berat are taught.
