Rarotonga offers a variety of ways to enjoy active and cultural holidays: the Cross Island Trek runs from the north to the south of the island, Muri Lagoon is a hub for swimming, kayaking and snorkelling, and churches and markets add to the itinerary. This mix can help you weigh up the focus of your trip and the location of a holiday apartment based on your own plans.

Hiking on Rarotonga

The Cross Island Trek passes Te Rua Manga (The Needle). It is rated moderate to difficult, is 6 km long and takes an average of 3 to 3.5 hours. The southern entrance, or endpoint, is at Wigmores Waterfall, at the end of Papua Road on the south side of Rarotonga. The route and estimated walking time may vary; check conditions locally.

The moderate Raemaru Trek has a shorter average walking time: the return route is 3.1 km long and takes an average of 90 minutes. The climb to the summit includes a 15 m rock-scrambling section. The two trails therefore differ both in average duration and difficulty rating. Conditions and the time required may also vary here. Maunga Tours offers a fully guided tour on the Cross Island Trek; ask the operator about current availability.

Lagoon, markets and evening entertainment

At Muri Lagoon, you can swim or kayak to the small island in front of Nautilus Resort Rarotonga. Captain Tama's Lagoon Cruizes & Aquasportz and Koka Lagoon Cruises offer snorkelling trips there. Guests may see giant clams and large schools of tropical fish; sightings are not guaranteed. Sea conditions may vary. Check the operators’ current services before booking.

Markets offer a range of different experiences, too. The Muri Night Market in Ngatangiia serves food from food trucks and stalls, including local barbecue, seafood, fresh drinking coconuts, curries, stir-fried noodles, pizza and desserts. The selection of vendors may vary. In Avarua, Punanga Nui Market combines free entertainment with stalls selling fresh produce and organic coffee. Souvenirs include pearls, artwork, handicrafts and hats made from coconut fronds; the selection there may also vary.

Rarotonga has Island Nights and weekly evening performances, including fire-dancing shows. As dates and availability may change, it is a good idea to check current performance dates in advance.

Churches and cultural history

Cook Islands Christian Churches (CICC) are spread across Rarotonga. Visitors can explore the churches and learn about their origins with the London Missionary Society, as well as important community figures who helped spread the Christian faith on the island. Rarotonga’s churches are built from white coral rock and limestone; services are held there on Sundays.

Visitors are welcome at Sunday services on Rarotonga. Men are advised to wear shirts and long trousers, and women longer skirts or dresses; shoulders should ideally be covered. Another historic landmark is Takamoa Theological College: completed in 1843, it was the first theological college established by the London Missionary Society in the South Pacific. Tuoro, also called Black Rock, is culturally significant to the people of the Cook Islands and is connected with Avaiki, the land of their ancestors.

Getting around and choosing accommodation

A main road runs around Rarotonga. There are no traffic lights on it and there are two roundabouts; the road layout may change. Two buses circle the island, one clockwise and one anticlockwise. They stop along the main road when hailed. Check current bus details locally.

Your planned activities can be a good starting point when choosing a holiday apartment: consider whether you mainly want to make time for the trek, experiences at Muri Lagoon, or markets and culture. Then compare your priorities with the accommodation’s exact location and the places you plan to visit. This way, you can base your decision on your actual travel plans without letting a single island activity define your entire stay.
