Ivirua Village can be explored through specific coastal and cave destinations. Te Ana o Taipiro is on the village coast, Toru a Puru Cave is nearby on Mangaia, and the beaches mentioned are spread north and south of Ivirua. This provides a practical way to choose a holiday rental: you can distinguish between destinations in the village, an excursion to the nearby area, and different beach locations. The question of whether to take a guide is also relevant, as the two cave experiences have different access requirements.

Caves with Different Access Requirements

Te Ana o Taipiro, also known as “The Cave of Taipiro,” is a sea cave on the coast of Ivirua Village. One travel guide describes the route as following an unpaved coastal path and a trail that is difficult to find. A guide is required for navigation; according to the travel guide, it can be difficult to find one. So arrange a guide before visiting rather than taking it for granted that one will be available.

For Toru a Puru Cave, nearby on Mangaia, exploring with a local guide is described as an option. It lies inland, while Te Ana o Taipiro is a sea cave on the coast of Ivirua. The caves therefore differ both in their coastal setting and in the role of a guide: a guided exploration is an option for Toru a Puru, while a guide is required for navigation at Te Ana.

Beaches North and South of Ivirua

Anguna Beach is on the eastern side of Mangaia, at the southern end of Ivirua Village, and can be reached via an unpaved turnoff from the coastal road. About one kilometre along Ivirua Coastal Road is the abandoned Ara Moana Bungalows complex; beyond it, a ladder leads down to the beach.

Karanga Nui Beach is on the eastern side of Mangaia, along the coastal road immediately north of Ivirua. Ara'oa Beach is on the northern side of the island, also along the coastal road, about 2.5 kilometres north of Ivirua Village. Both are north of Ivirua, but the descriptions differ in precision: Karanga Nui is located immediately north, while Ara'oa is given an approximate distance. Anguna, meanwhile, is at the southern end of Ivirua. This makes it easy to compare the coast from north to south.

Choose a Location That Suits Your Excursions

When choosing a holiday rental, you can use this to plan a practical itinerary: first decide whether your excursions will stay on the coast of Ivirua or also include Toru a Puru nearby. The beach locations can then help you orient yourself between the southern end of the village and the northern destinations. If caves are your main focus, their different locations and guide requirements matter more than a general description of the village.
