Discover Kinshasa: Culture and History
Accommodation in Kinshasa
Kinshasa brings together performing arts, music, and history in different ways. At the Grande Halle, performances and debates take centre stage; at monuments and historic sites, you can encounter specific events and people. Just outside the city, the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary offers the chance to observe bonobos.
Performing Arts, Music, and Debate
The Grande Halle at the Institut Français de Kinshasa can host performances, artists, and events. These include ballets by Alain Platel, performances by Papa Wemba, as well as circus, theatre, and dance competitions. The examples range from music and dance to theatre and circus, showing different facets of the performing arts programme.
The Grands Débats de la Gombe are also part of the Grande Halle programme. This monthly series draws more than 500 people to each edition. If you would like to attend, check the current date in advance.
History at Specific Sites
The first steam locomotive, driven by engineer Nicolas Cito, stands on the site of today’s Gare centrale. The connection between this technical object and a named engineer makes this site a point of reference in the city’s history.
The Mémorial du Soldat Congolais stands at the Rond-point Forescom. Three soldiers standing side by side commemorate three periods in the Congolese army’s history: the Force publique, the Forces armées zaïroises (FAZ), and the Forces armées de la République démocratique du Congo (FARDC). These three references give the memorial a clearly structured historical message.
A precisely dated event is associated with the Palais de la Nation: the independence of the Democratic Republic of the Congo was proclaimed there on 30 June 1960. The Musée National is located in Kinshasa’s historic Commune Lingwala and adds a museum to the city’s cultural sites.
The Jardin des Premiers Ministres is located on the grounds of the Primature in Kinshasa. Busts there honour former prime ministers of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The garden is also an open-air museum dedicated to Congolese artistic expression, displaying several significant works of art. History and art come together here in one place.
The mausoleum of Laurent-Désiré Kabila is located on the former Place du Trône. Kabila was the first president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was also known as “Mzee”. His name and title link this memorial site to a defining figure in the country’s history.
An Activity Just Outside the City
The Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary is just outside Kinshasa. There, visitors can accompany a keeper on a boat ride at feeding time and watch bonobos gather to eat. This experience differs significantly from the city’s performing arts and history themes, adding wildlife observation to your trip.
Keep Your Travel Priorities in Mind When Looking for Accommodation
When planning your trip, it helps to compare specific interests: would you like to focus on culture and history in Kinshasa, or also include bonobo observation just outside the city? You can use these priorities to guide your holiday rental search. This helps you decide which experiences will shape your trip before choosing suitable accommodation.
