In San José de Chiquitos, impressive mission architecture and Chiquitano culture meet landscapes of rock, forest and wetlands. This gives your trip several possible focuses: you can explore historic buildings and murals, discover trails and viewpoints, or get to know the region’s cuisine. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to think in advance about which of these experiences you would most like to focus on.

Mission Architecture and Living Culture

The façade of the Conjunto Misional brings together the Capilla Mortuoria, the church, the Campanario and the Bóveda. The structures were built in three stages with the participation of approximately 5,000 Indigenous people. The Conjunto Misional in San José de Chiquitos is considered the only stone mission church building in the Chiquitos region—a distinctive detail for anyone interested in architectural history.

The Espacio Cultural Chiquitos, also known as El Museo, is located within the Conjunto Misional. It is housed in the former Casa de los Misioneros, or Colegio. Its walls feature more than 2,500 m² of restored and conserved murals. This brings architecture and painting into close spatial connection. As part of Ruta SaboreArte Chiquitos tours, a guided, paid visit to the Espacio Cultural Chiquitos is possible. Check current arrangements and fees with the provider.

Casa del Bastón is also a place to meet, exchange ideas and celebrate on special days. These include Día de la Virgen de la Candelaria, Semana Santa and Día de la Tradición Josesana. These feast days are specific cultural occasions in the town.

At the Pascana La Tranquera workshop, visitors can learn how the “Máscara del Abuelo” is made, find out about the mask’s meaning and the craft of mask carving, and paint a mask using colors that represent part of Chiquitania’s history. The cultural Pascanas offered by Ruta SaboreArte Chiquitos are subject to availability; check with the provider before making plans.

Rocks, Forest and Trails

Nearby Cerro Turubó lies 2 km east of the main square. Conditions there are described as suitable for hiking, easy climbing and observing native birds. They may change. Depending on your interests, you can combine an outing with some exercise or a closer look at native birdlife.

At nearby Valle de la Luna, distinctive Precambrian rocks, rolling terrain and native vegetation shape part of the Serranía. The valley is 10 km from the town and also offers hiking trails and a small sanctuary. The sanctuary is associated with the pilgrimage of Virgen del Carmen and Divino Niño.

Sendero La Montañeta is a short, easy trail through the dry Chiquitano forest. Along the way, you can see native flora and fauna as well as unusually shaped rock formations. Trail conditions may change. At Mirador La Montañeta, a platform offers views of the Chiquitano forest, the town of San José and Cerro Turubó. The viewpoint can be reached after a ten-minute walk on Sendero Montañeta; walking time may vary depending on the person and conditions.

Nearby Parque Nacional Histórico y Arqueológico Santa Cruz la Vieja preserves archaeological remains of the first settlement of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Captain Ñuflo de Cháves founded it on February 26, 1561. A guided tour with a tourist guide is available there as part of Ruta SaboreArte Chiquitos tours. Ask the provider about current availability.

Parque Ecológico La Pauroca is a natural wetland and a 500 m² green space developed as a recreation park for residents and visitors. The La Pauroca women artisans’ group in San José de Chiquitos offers clothing with Baroque details. Products may vary.

Chiquitano Cuisine and the Right Accommodation

Ruta SaboreArte connects local cuisine with recipes passed down through generations: the cooks invite visitors to try traditional dishes they learned from their grandparents. The food offerings also include a gourmet Chiquitano cuisine menu with an appetizer, soup, main course, dessert and drink; the selected dishes are served in a gourmet style. Menus and food availability vary.

If you are looking for a vacation rental in San José de Chiquitos, these different interests can guide your choice of location: mission history, murals, nature experiences or culinary discoveries. The places described offer different themes for planning your trip, without requiring you to fit everything into a single outing.
