Porto Novo offers several ways to explore culture and history: Zangbeto ceremonies, Afro-Brazilian-inspired architecture and places that represent the city’s cultural heritage. These are distinct from the cultural and landscape themes of the larger destination, Ouémé Department.

Ceremonies and architecture in Porto Novo

Today, the Zangbeto perform at ceremonies, dance and present magic tricks. Alongside the buildings, this living ceremonial tradition is central to Porto Novo’s cultural identity. It is a distinct area of interest for travelers curious about local customs.

The cityscape also offers architectural points of interest: Porto Novo has Brazilian-influenced architecture as well as winding, fortified streets. The Grande Mosquée de Porto-Novo features Afro-Brazilian-inspired architecture. It can be admired from its surroundings and visited on a guided tour, with due respect for religious practices. The focus is on architecture, history and the mosque’s significance to Porto Novo’s cultural heritage.

Porto Novo is also home to the Alexandre Sènou Adandé Ethnographic Museum, the Honmè Museum and the da Silva Museum of Afro-Brazilian Art and Culture. These places offer different perspectives: ethnography, museum history, and Afro-Brazilian art and culture. Together with the mosque and the architecture, they offer a range of cultural and historical themes to shape your travel interests around.

Ouémé Department: a broader cultural context

Ouémé Department lies in southeastern Benin; Porto Novo is the administrative seat of the Département de l’Ouémé. Other places in the department include Adjohoun, Adjarra and Bonou. They have their own historical, cultural and landscape themes, distinct from the features of Porto Novo.

In Adjohoun, Joseph Biléou OSHOFFA received his first revelations at Lac Godro in May 1947, which led to the founding of the Church of Celestial Christianity. Wémèxhoué, the identity festival of the Wémè people, is also associated with Adjohoun. Official events take place once every four years; no next date has therefore been set.

Adjarra’s history also offers a distinct and sobering focus. The Zoungodo complex includes palaces, vegetation, relics, sacred trees, residential ruins and clay houses where slave chains were found. Ahouanmatin Square in the center of Adjarra served as a gathering and transit point for enslaved people. In Adjohoun, the “Tree of No Return” is also associated with enslaved people who were purchased in the Kingdom of Fanvi and its surroundings.

Festivals, food and landscapes

The Festival des Masques 2026 is a clearly time-bound example of a cultural program in Porto Novo. The family program included children’s mask workshops featuring painting, face painting and an introduction to mask-making. It also included wood-carving demonstrations, beadwork and an introduction to traditional rhythms. These activities relate to the 2026 edition and are not a general or ongoing offering.

The cuisine of Adjohoun is another distinct regional theme. Local dishes include sauce graine with sesame cheese (Goussi), corn paste and Abla, a paste made from beans and red palm oil.

The landscape of Adjohoun includes the plains of Azowlissè and the sacred forests and gallery forests of Togbozoun, Lodouko, Kpinkonzoun and Vazoun. These forests are home primarily to animal species, including red-bellied monkeys. Bonou is known for the Houêdagbo floodplain and the Atchabita hot spring; the classified forest of Bonou is also one of the municipality’s tourist attractions. These landscape features complement the cultural sites without being equated with Porto Novo’s urban features.

When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: is your trip primarily about Porto Novo’s cultural themes, or would you also like to explore the different places and themes across Ouémé Department?
