Dassa-Zoumè is shaped by distinctive hills and diverse cultural and spiritual associations. The sites represent a wide range of themes: stone sculpture, Fâ, Sakpata, hanging wells and devotion. This combination makes the destination especially interesting for travellers who want to explore both the landscape and its cultural connections. This also gives you several thematic focal points for planning your trip, rather than a single defining theme.

Hills and a landscape of wells

Minifi is associated with the hill of the reclining lion, Ilema with Ilema’s Radio Hill, and Camate-Tchakaloke with Camate Hill. Ayaha is associated with the hills of the hanging wells. These associations give the hills different names and imagery. Visitors interested in striking landscape features will find references here to a reclining lion, a radio hill and hanging wells.

In the village of Awaya, about a dozen inexhaustible hanging wells are located on a hill.

Cultural sites and traditions

Okuta is an international meeting place for stone sculpture artists, as well as a museum and cultural centre. Yaka is associated with the hill of the princes, an ecological museum and a resistance millstone. Oke Agbanou is the hill of Fâ; according to tradition, all the Fâ signs were engraved there by an invisible giant hand. Fragba is considered the worldwide seat of Sakpata. Aribo is regarded as a hot spring that encompasses the Notre-Dame Marian grotto.

These cultural associations offer different points of interest: Okuta brings together stone sculpture, a museum and a cultural centre, while Oke Agbanou is linked to the tradition of the Fâ signs. Yaka and Fragba, in turn, are associated with princes and Sakpata. Before your trip, you can consider whether you are especially interested in art sites, spiritual themes or the named hills.

On foot and in the wider region

Depending on the route, the hills of Dassa can be explored on foot with a guide or independently; this also applies to paths between the rock formations of the Collines de Dassa. Check the access conditions for your chosen route in advance. What is possible depends on the path.

In the wider Collines destination, the Collines de Dassa rise above the town of Dassa-Zoumè and offer one of Benin’s best-known panoramas. The hills are home to several places of devotion and are considered an important pilgrimage site, where natural and spiritual heritage come together. The town of Savè, also in the wider Collines destination, is surrounded by hills known as the Mamelles. At Dassa-Zoumè, the hills rise above the town; at Savè, the Mamelles surround it.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide what interests you most: cultural sites, a landscape of hills and wells, or spiritual associations?
